The rink is pink....

I must say that tonights Pats/Oil Kings game is going to have a different feel to it. The pink ice surface I'm sure will cause some distractions until the players get used to it. From the pictures that have been shown.... it looks like they will be playing on a bed of insulation or cotton candy.

What a crazy week

I'm back and hopefully I will be able to post more frequently.

Well the Pats are still in the CHL Top 10 and I'm proud of them.

The Pats/Blades gaem sounded really interesting. Too bad they couldn't have pulled it off but they never gave up.

Game night tonight.

Game Night! Pats vs. Hitmen

The Pats return to the Brandt Centre ice tonight with a date with the Calgary Hitmen. The action will be hot both on and off the ice. For the first time ever, the Brandt Centre will have “Thirsty Thursday” as $8 will get you 32oz of Molson of product. This will also mark the return of WWE hall of famer, Bret “the Hitman” Hart to Regina. He will sign autographs on the concourse beginning when the door open at 6:00pm.

Calgary @ Regina October 20th, 2011 WHL Game Notes

Head to Head
This will be the second time in just over a week that the Hitmen and Pats have met. Last week in Calgary, The first 57 minutes of the hockey game, the Hitmen carried the play at home against the Pats. The Hitmen held a 3-1 lead until a Jordan Weal power play goal with 2:50 left in the 3rd cut the Hitmen lead to 3-2, then with the net empty, Dyson Stevenson tipped in a Brandon Davidson point shot with just 51 seconds left on the clock to tie the game. Overtime solved nothing, and in a shootout, both Jordan Weal and Morgan Klimchuk scored while Matt Hewitt stopped 2 of three Hitmen shooters for the 4-3 victory.

I may not be able to live blog tonight as I can't find the charger for my laptop so I may just throw a few updates and thoughts from my phone as the game goes along..... Maybe that will be better for the blog, it will probably give me a better opportunity to take and make notes (scribbling is quicker for me than typing). But we'll see.

Having a blog....

And not having stable internet is a bad combination. I promise updates and I can't do them at home and it bothers me. So I'm doing this at work when I really should be working. I'm going to get this internet thing straightened out soon! Otherwise I'll be updating things from my phone.

Anyway, I'm still here cheering them on.

GO PATS GO!
on October 18, 2011 by Kevin Shaw |

Unfortunately....

my internet at home is still acting up.

What have I missed?

The Pats pulled off the win in Calgary despite what sounded like a lacklustre effort especially in the second period. I didn't watch the game due to my ongoing internet issues so I was only able to listen to it so I can't make any judgements on the penalty calls in the seven powerplay barrage the Hitmen had limiting the Pats to 1 shot in the frame. This year's Pats battled through and scored two late goals to get the game to OT and then to the shootout where it seems like Jordan Weal is still money in the circus.

What did Chandler Stephenson do to get 2 games as a scratch? I wonder if he'll play in Edmonton tonight.

Matt Marantz sounded as though he fit in right away. I also noticed something on the WHL site.... he's wearing an 'A' already? Wow. That must be some leadership he brings to the table. It's too bad the Pats let him go in the first place (was once listed by the Pats). Edit: I'm thinking that Marantz doesn't have an 'A' on his jersey and that it's a WHL.ca mistake.

I know he's only had 7 starts this year but Matt Hewitt has shaved nearly 2 goals against off of his GAA totals from last year. He's also increased his his Save Percentage by 34 points. I've been impressed with him and his aggressive play and his netminding is getting stronger as the games go on.

Is Dyson Stevenson the second coming of Greg Pankewicz? I don't know but I think they are very similar. Well this is for those of you that know who Greg is.

This weekend is going to test this Pats team. Edmonton looks very strong and the Pats didn't do well against them last season. Red Deer on Saturday will be another huge matchup, even though the Rebels are 4-3 they always battle hard.

As Always,

GO PATS GO

P.S. hopefully I have a working internet this weekend so I can watch the games. I will have more later (work and time permitting).

A very special night in memory of former Captain Rick Rypien

Tonight will be a special night for the Regina Pats organization. Earlier in the summer, former Captain, Rick Rypien passed away. It was one of many tragic moments for the hockey world but one that affected the Regina Pats very deeply. Rick’s mother Shelly will be in attendance and will drop the puck before the game between the Pats and the Cougars.

Tonight, the hockey club is also proud to rename their “Unsung Hero Award” award the “Rick Rypien Award” because he best exemplified hard work not just on the ice, but also what he meant to his teammates and all the work that Rick did in the community.

“In memory of a person who was the epitome of what we want our players to be, it is MY Honour and Privilege to announce that we will be renaming the Regina Pats Unsung Hero award in the Name of former Regina Pat Rick Rypien.” Regina Pats President, Brent Parker continues, “It is an honour that he earned through his commitment, dedication and selflessness. We all miss him dearly but through this award he will continue to have an impact on our organization.”

The ceremony will take place before tonight’s game between the number four team in the country, your Regina Pats and the Prince George Cougars. The Cougars are making their bi-annual trip to Regina and it will be the only chance for fans to see Oilers 2010 second round pick, defenceman Martin Marincin and former Pat, now Cougar Captain, Cody Carlson.

Pats Weekend Preview

For Immediate Release
October 7th, 2011

Home Sweet Home
After a Four Game Road Trip, the Pats Return Home for Back to Back Games

After a successful road trip that saw the Pats go 3-1 and propel them into the number four spot in the CHL Top 10, they will return home to the Brandt Centre beginning tonight against the Lethbridge Hurricanes with the Prince George Cougars paying a visit on Saturday.

Friday, October 7th                          Hurricanes @ Pats
Brandt Centre 7:00pm (Live on Access TV)

This will be the back half of a home and home series for the Pats against the Hurricanes with the Pats taking the front end this past Saturday 4-1. The ‘Canes did have a stop on their road trip this past Wednesday in a 3-2 loss in Moose Jaw.

The faces of the Lethbridge Hurricanes:
G – Brandon Anderson
The 19 year old goaltender is a signed free agent by the Washington Capitals. He is the Hurricanes #1 goaltender ahead of former Pat Damien Ketlo and 17 year old Tanner Kovacs.

C – Cam Braes
Braes, along with Brody Sutter and Matt Marantz are a part of a dynamic trio of 20 year old forwards with the Hurricanes. He led the Hurricanes in goals with 31 and points with 61 in 2010-11.

RW – Matt Marantz
The 20 year old forward was recently acquired by the Hurricanes in a trade with the Spokane Chiefs. Marantz is in his 3rd season in the WHL and attended Regina Pats training camp in 2007.

Saturday, October 8th                      Cougars @ Pats
Brandt Centre 7:00pm

The Pats and Cougars will meet for the only time in the 2011-12 season and it’s the first time Prince George has paid a visit to the Brandt Centre since a 4-2 loss on November 10th, 2009.

The faces of the Prince George Cougars:
D - Martin Marincin
The Slovakian native, Marincin, is in his second year in the WHL and was solid with the Cougars a year ago with 56 points in 67 games. Marincin was recently sent back to Prince George by the Edmonton Oilers, whom made him a 2nd round pick in the 2010 NHL Draft

D – Cody Carlson
The former Pat defenceman is back in Regina for the first time since being sent to the Cougars last October in exchange for Artem Bidlevskii. Carlson was recently named captain of the Cougars.

C – Alex Forsberg
The 16 year old rookie is a part of an outstanding crop of 1995 players with the Prince George Cougars. He is currently in a tie for the team lead in points with 5.

Pat Facts:

All Around Scoring:
It hasn’t been just one player that is guiding the Pats offensively in the early parts of the season, help is coming from all four lines. Dyson Stevenson, Jordan Weal and Lane Scheidl are in a tie for top spot with seven points apiece, but all three play on different lines, while defenceman Brandon Davidson is also has seven points on the season.

In Matt we Trust:
19 year old goaltender, Matt Hewitt was given the goaltending reigns at the end of training camp, and he has flourished. He is currently first in wins (4), second in the WHL in goals against average (1.75) and third in save percentage (.936).
