Pats to Honour Players

From Dan Plaster

For Immediate Release
September 23rd, 2011

Pats to Honour Tragic Passing of Four Former WHL Players

Regina, Saskatchewan – The past few months have been a tragic time in the hockey world. To show our respect and in memory of the losses that were incurred by the WHL and the Regina Pats over the summer the Pats will pay homage to former Pats, Derek Boogaard and Rick Rypien during the 2011/2012 WHL season. Starting with the home opener tonight a customized Regina Pat logo with the names and numbers of Derek and Rick along with the words “In Memory” will be displayed on the back of the Regina Pats bench at the Brandt Centre.

Additionally the Pats will wear a special helmet decal that has the WHL Logo surrounded by the initials of Wade Belak, Derek Boogaard, Brad McCrimmon and former Pat Captain Rick Rypien.

On Friday, January 27th, the Pats will have Rick Rypien bobblehead night, a night fully supported by the Rypien family because we will use the bobbleheads to raise money for Kidsport - Crowsnest Pass, a charity that Rick supported in his home region. We will also be using that night to raise money to support Boogaard’s Boogaardians which was Derek’s charity that supported military families in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota.

"We have all been deeply saddened by these tragic loses and we felt it was very important to recognize not only Derek and Rick but Brad and Wade as well.” Regina Pats President, Brent Parker continues, “The contribution these men made to their communities and the legacy that they have left behind is a testament to the people they were. Our hearts go out to all of their families"
A moment of silence will take place prior to the Pats home opener tonight versus the Swift Current Broncos.

First period quick thoughts:
-Lots of hitting in this one tonight. Brandon having advantage in the physical aspect for most of the period but the Pats are holding their own.

-The officials pretty much kept their whistles in their pockets and deservedly so. Not much need for penalty calls. Pretty clean game so far as far as the "extra curricular" stuff goes.

-Dyson Stevenson needs to play. The kid can snipe.... "bar down" on his first period goal.

-Liston looks a bit shaky in the first especially on his gift goal by Klimchuk.

-The announcer (I don't know it is) is terrible..... sorry. It's a hockey game not a funeral.

Pats and Broncos Pre-Season #4 Tonight

I'm looking forward to this one tonight. I want to see the Pats in the Brandt (14 games/scrimmages in the Co-op is just a bit much).

I would take guesses as to who is and isn't playing for the Pats but I'll assume all of the NHL bound guys won't be in the lineup as 4 are gone already and the other two leave soon.

I've somehow misplaced my camera so I probably won't be able to take pictures (I'm still looking for it).... I'm hoping I find it. Edit: I found my camera.

I don't know if I'll be able to live blog.... I'll see when I get there. I'll definitely take lots of notes and have many brilliant observations (I laughed as I typed that last sentence).

We'll see what happens.

Horrible news from the hockey world.... again....

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=375297

TUNOSHNA, Russia -- An off-season already rife with tragedy dealt another gut-wrenching blow to hockey's highest ranks Wednesday when a private jet slammed into a Russian riverbank, killing all but one member of a prominent pro hockey team -- including its Canadian coach.
In all, 43 people died, including 27 players of the well-known Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team and coach Brad McCrimmon, of Plenty, Sask., who took over the club in May. Nine other team officials and seven crew members were also killed.
McCrimmon, 52, was most recently an assistant coach with the Detroit Red Wings, and played for years in the NHL for Calgary, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Hartford and Phoenix. He won a Stanley Cup in 1989 as a member of the Calgary Flames.
"This is the darkest day in the history of our sport," said Rene Fasel, president of the International Ice Hockey Federation.
Follow the TSN.ca link to read the rest of the story (and comments).

Statement on the Passing of Brad McCrimmon

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats Hockey Club would like to issue the following statement regarding the tragic passing of former WHL player and coach, Brad McCrimmon:

Regina Pats President, Brent Parker, “It has been a horrific summer for the hockey business and losing another WHL alumnus in Brad McCrimmon adds to the tragedy. Brad was a tremendous ambassador for the WHL and hockey in general. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire McCrimmon family and all of the people who lost loved ones today.”

Regina Pats General Manager Chad Lang, “We are all deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Brad McCrimmon. As a member of the 2010 Memorial Cup Committee I was fortunate to have spent quality time with both Kelly and Brad. Brad was highly respected in the hockey community and was a tremendous son, brother, husband and father. He will be deeply missed by all.”
