Pats at Swift Current (Friday)

I listened to most of the game and it sounded like a good game. Former Pat Derek Tendler was in net for the Broncos and made 37 saves in the 4-3 loss. Weal, Bidlevskii, Ouellette and Neigum (with the winner) scored for the Pats.

Here is the summary:

....Again.

....No scoring. Lots of upset fans at a certain Pats blueliner. Some people are dumb.

....37-37 shots after the OT.

Live Blog: Pats & Hitmen Third Period

....On deck in 18 minutes.

....0:40 Fisticuffs Bell vs. Rissling. Not much of a scrap but I would give Bell the decision as he appeared to get the upperhand and got more blows in (especially early). Rissling is bleeding from the mouth/nose.

....12:28 The Hitmen tie the contest at 1 on a goal from Trzonkowski assisted by Lawrence and Santini.1-1.

....Pats are playing like they don't want to lose but don't want to win. They are very lax and it's not pretty.

....All of a sudden a switch has been flipped and the play has turned the Pats way (to a point).

....34-33 shots after 3. Heading to overtime.

....8:08 Pats to the powerplay for the third time tonight as Macek gets a hooking call. Time to light the lamp.

....11:33 Moser takes the Pats first minor of the night for delay of game as he apparently knocked the net off of the moorings using a Hitman player to stop the play. Hitmen to the powerplay.

....12:47 Humphries ends the Hitmen powerplay by taking an interference penalty. Some 4on4 play.

....The Pats will have a 1:14 powerplay to try to get on the board.

....17:10 Moser gets the Pats on the board burying a rebound on a scramble. Weal and Davidson pick up the helpers. 1-0 Pats.

....18:25 Schmidt is in the box for hooking. Pats powerplay.

CALGARY (18-36-2-2)
at REGINA (20-31-6-1)
Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre
Radio: 620 CKRM
Key injuries: REGINA — RW Andrew Rieder (knee, day-to-day), D Tyler Pavkovich (concussion, indefinite). CALGARY — F Tyler Fiddler (ankle, day-to-day).
Overview: Regina’s playoff hopes took a huge hit with Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders. As a result, the Pats fell six points behind Prince Albert in the race for the final post-season berth in the Eastern Conference. Regina has just 14 games left — only four of which are at home — with one game in hand on Prince Albert . . . The Hitmen own the worst record in the WHL but they’re no pushover, as evidenced by a 3-1 upset win over the host Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday . . . Following tonight’s contest, Regina plays its next six games on the road, beginning Saturday against the Medicine Hat Tigers. On Monday, the Pats and Hitmen are slated to participate in an outdoor game at McMahon Stadium as part of the NHL’s Heritage Classic . . . The Pats will be wearing the special jerseys tonight that were designed for the Heritage Classic. They’ll be available for purchase via silent auction tonight in the first and second periods . . . Calgary’s top scorers are overager Kris Foucault (19-21—40, 52 GP) and breakout sniper Justin Kirsch (22-15—37, 54 GP) . . . The Pats are led by C Jordan Weal (29-45—74, 58 GP) and D Brandon Davidson (8-35—43, 58 GP). Weal is eighth in the WHL scoring race while Davidson sits ninth among defencemen . . . The Hitmen have an 8-18-2-1 road record. Regina is 13-15-3-1 at the Brandt Centre . . . Calgary is ranked 17th on the power play (16.7%) and 18th on the penalty kill (78%). The Pats are 19th on the PP (16.4%) and 19th on the PK (76.1%) . . . The Pats and Hitmen are both running a two-man goalie rotation. Calgary splits its starts between Mike Snider (3.65 GAA) and Brandon Glover (3.46 GAA). Regina does the same with Matt Hewitt (3.59 GAA) and Damien Ketlo (4.24 GAA). Hewitt started Regina’s past two games . . . The Hitmen, defending WHL champions, are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996-97.

....In 18 minutes.

....0:16 Pats get an early powerplay on a high sticking call to Fiddler.

....0:26 Pats get a 5on3 for 1:50 on a tripping call to Rowley.

....1:20 Mitchell ends the 5on3 taking a bad roughing call. Pats still on the powerplay 4on3.

....Nothing happening. Raiders have a 54 second powerplay.

....4:41 Pats to the powerplay on a tripping call to Yaworski.

....5:24 Weal gives the Pats the lead on a nice stickhandle past Deck and sliding the puck past Williams for the Old Dutch powerplay goal. Assists to Davidson and Mitchell. 3-2 Pats.

....7:00 Corbin takes a tripping penalty giving the Pats another man advantage. A couple nice chances but to no avail.

....9:45 Neigum takes a chincy slashing call giving the Raiders a powerplay.

....10:28 Raiders tie it up on the powerplay. Not a great kill by the Pats d. A very similar goal to the Raiders first powerplay (actually the same scoring play as well I think). McNeill from Rowley and Corbin. 3-3.

....11:21 a fairly weak goal for the Raiders Maylan who is able to slide the puck 5 hole past Hewitt. The defence didn't help much on this one. Parker with the lone assist. 4-3 Raiders.

....12:53 Blidstrand takes a bad holding call giving the Raiders their 5th powerplay of the night. They have already scored twice with the man advantage both by McNeill. Decent kill by the Pats

....Not much to report other than the Pats were robbed of a goal (in my opinion anyway). 4-3 end of the 2nd.

....27-24 Shots for the Raiders.

....Third up soon.

....Nice to see Reddin back in the line-up (I shouldn't say that for sure.... he was in the warmup).

....Mitchell is playing LW with Weal and Moser (RW). Davidson and Schneider are the starting d pair.

....4:02 Maylan takes a tripping call while forechecking against the Pats Schneider. Pats to the powerplay.

....No luck on the powerplay.

....7:05 Pats go up 1-0 on a goal by Moser (4th) on a sweet tip from a shot by Davidson. Mitchell picks up the 2nd assist. 1-0 Pats.

....12:00 Raiders capitalize on the powerplay tying the game at 1. McNeill from Rowley and Corbin. 1-1.

....12:31 Raiders take the lead after receiving a gift 2 on 1. Parker is able to sneak the puck past a sprawled ot Hewitt. Maylan and Revenko get the helpers. 2-1 Raiders.

....13:16 Mitchell has been awarded a penalty shot after being taken down on a breakaway. Nice move but nicer stop. Still 2-1.

....13:36 Bettauer takes a cross checking minor giving the Pats the advantage and opportunity to tie it.

....13:44 Tie game! Mitchell tips home a Bell wrister on the Old Dutch powerplay. Assists to Bell and Davidson. 2-2. Edit: This was changed in the second period.

....17:55 Bidlevskii gets a roughing penalty giving the Raiders another powerplay to pretty much end the period (unless they score).

....Good kill by the Pats.

....14-11 shots for the Raiders.

Pats/Tigers Live Blog: Part Three

....In 18 minutes.

....4:52 Bell loses the handle on the puck and takes a tripping call as Tochkin was attempting to take the puck in on a break. Powerplay Tigers.

....6:52 the Tigers tie it up just as the penalty expired on a beauty tip by Tochkin. Vey and Hamilton pick up the helpers. 2-2. It was such a good kill too. Hewitt made a couple more beauty stops.... but can't stop them all.

....11:33 Hamilton takes a holding minor sending the Pats up a man.

....32-31 shots for the Pats.

....Off to extra time.

Pats/Tigers Live Blog: Part Two

....Second period coming up in 15 minutes.

....Kessey gets a checking from behind minor at 1:20 giving the Pats another man advantage. We need to score here.

....1:59 Davidson gives the Pats a 1-0 lead as the trailing man on a 4 on 2 break. Assists go to Weal and Mitchell.

....5:16 Pats take a 2-0 lead on a goal by Scheidl. Schneider fired a slapper from the point that went wide and bounced off the boards to the side of the net where Scheidl is able to chip it in past Bunz. Assists go to Stephenson and Borstmayer (I'm thinking that will change).

....5:52 Borstmayer and McKay engage in some rough stuff and the linesmen break it up before actually getting to scrap. Matching unsportsmanlike conduct minors. Here's some 4on4 play.

....6:06 Blidstrand takes a tripping call and gives the Tigers a 4 on 3 powerplay.

....Great kill. A couple superb stops by Hewitt!

....13:40 Coyle pulls the Tigers to within 1 with a slapshot from the point that beats a completely screened Hewitt (he had no chance). Assists to Valk and Vey. 2-1 Pats.

....28-23 shots for the Pats after two.

Pats/Tigers Live Blog: Part One

....Matt Hewitt gets his turn between the pipes tonight. I hope the team backs him up tonight (and that he stands on his head too).

....It looks like the Pats are short bodies tonight.... Reddin, Pavkovich and Rieder didn't take the warm-up.

....I know it's early but I'm thinking that the crowd may be a bit sparse and that there will be a alot of the SaskTel Pats hats left to give away. I'm hoping that more people show.

....It's a dark one in the building. Some of the brighter lights aren't on and only a couple seem to be warming up.

....Tigers take the first penalty of the game 2:18 in on a penalty by Shinkaruk for tripping. Pats to the powerplay.... hopefully they can click.

....Good powerplay with quality chances (Med Hat had one too).

....At the tail end of the powerplay Neigum and Owuya have a nice fisticuff battle. I would call it a draw.... Neigum gets a instigator to go with it. In all honesty I didn't see how it started. Neigum wasn't a happy camper **** this, **** that, etc. Tigers to the powerplay.

....Good kill by the Pats.

....6:51 Tochkin gives the Pats another powerplay on a high sticking call.

....9:53 Valk gives the Pats yet another powerplay on a goalie interference penalty.

....16:25 Shinkaruk gets a holding minor and the Pats get another powerplay. We need to capitialize on this one.

....Action is fast and furious. Scheidl is robbed by Bunz and the loose puck is covered up by a Tiger defender in the crease.

....Penalty Shot by Bell.... Nice attempt but runs out of real estate and Bunz stops him blocker side.

....Man some people aren't happy people. The Pats end the first outshooting the Tigers 19-5 and people are still complaining. It's usually the other way around. C'mon people. With the help of the powerplays the majority of the play has been in the Tiger end. Hewitt has come up huge a couple of times to keep the game knotted at 0's.

Pats/Tigers Preview

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots....

Tigers-Pats preview
By Greg Harder Sat, Feb 12 2011 COMMENTS(0) Slap Shots

MEDICINE HAT (36-16-3-0)
at REGINA (19-30-6-1)
Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre
Radio: 620 CKRM
Key injuries: REGINA — D Artem Bidlevskii (undisclosed), C Colin Reddin (undisclosed). MEDICINE HAT — RW Tyler Pitlick (concussion), F Sam Dezman (concussion, indefinite), D Alex Theriau (ankle, day-to-day), D Scott Ramsay (concussion, day-to-day).
Overview: It’s the third of four meetings between Regina and Medicine Hat. The Tigers won the first two — 6-4 in Medicine Hat on Nov. 13 and 4-3 on Jan. 25 at the Brandt Centre. The teams conclude their season series next Saturday in Medicine Hat . . . WHL scoring leader Linden Vey (38-52—90, 53 GP) has two goals and four assists in two games against Regina this season while rookie Hunter Shinkaruk and sniper Emerson Etem have two goals and two assists apiece. Pats captain Garrett Mitchell has two goals and two assists against the Tigers . . . Medicine Hat is coming off a 6-5 overtime loss on Friday to the host Brandon Wheat Kings, who tied the game with 12 seconds left in regulation on a goal by Matt MacKay, then won it in OT on a penalty-shot marker by Michael Ferland . . . In the midst of a three-game losing streak, Regina’s playoff aspirations are dwindling by the day. A tough portion of the schedule — four games in five nights — doesn’t get any easier with another of the WHL’s elite teams in town tonight. With 16 games left, the Pats sit four points behind the Prince Albert Raiders and Swift Current Broncos, who are tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Regina is five points behind the seventh-place Brandon Wheat Kings and two back of the 10th-place Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Pats have two games in hand on Swift Current and one each on P.A. and Brandon.

....Davidson gets a holding minor at 12:07 putting the Ice up a man.

....4-1 Ice at 15:22. Moser is unable to get back to cover his man and Fraser deposits a nice deflection off of a pass from Reinhart. Nice goal. Ketlo had no chance.

....Terrible giveaway by the Pats D Eakin picks up the hattrick and pretty much seals the Pats fate. 5-1 Ice.

....5-1 Final. 40-35 shots for the Ice.
on February 11, 2011 by Kevin Shaw |

Pats/Ice: Live Blog Second Period

....up next.

....Rintoul gets a delay of game minor 4 seconds into the second. Pats to the powerplay again.

....Nothing again on the powerplay (literally nothing).

....Eakin snipes blocker side on Ketlo tying the game at 2:47. Antilla and King assist on the play. 1-1.

....Fisticuffs Moser vs. Ismond. Ismond with the easy W.

....Another powerplay for the Pats as King takes a hooking minor at 11:41.

....12:43 Eakin steals the puck at centre ice from Stephenson and takes it in on a breakaway and beats Ketlo blocker side. 2-1 Ice.

....15:07 Ice go up 3-1 as Pearce beats a screened Ketlo glove side. Eakin picks up the lone assist.

....19:44 Scheidl takes the Pats first minor penalty for hooking. Ice to the powerplay for the first time tonight.

....Second ends 3-1 Ice. 25-23 shots for the Pats.
on February 11, 2011 by Kevin Shaw |

Pats/Ice: Live Blog First Period

....Ketlo starts.

....Vetter refs.

....Not much to report thru the first half of the period. Definitely a quick period with only 9 combined shots on net (5-4 Ice).

....12:29 Ice get an elbowing minor (Martin) giving the Pats the first powerplay of the game.

....The powerplay nets nothing.

....The Pats get on the board first on a nice snipe by Bell (his 12th) at 14:38. Bell stole a clearing attempt at the blueline and went in and beat Lieuwen glove side. 1-0 Pats.

....Ice take another minor (holding to Reinhart) at 18:14.

....Ugly start to this powerplay endig with no chances. 14 seconds left to start the 2nd.

....8-7 shots for the Ice after the first.

Pup Line thoughts

I got chatting with Ken Stromberg (Pats penalty box attendant, scorekeeper, timekeeper, etc.) via BlackBerry Messenger the night Mike Sillinger had his number retired. Here are his thoughts about the Pup Line as viewed from the sin bin:

On Mike Sillinger:
Mike Sillinger was incredibly skilled---most of the 3 on the Pup Line. He was also the most intense. Whenever he received a penalty, you usually didn't try to make conversation. You also tried to stay dry. The water bottles would usually get emptied all over the penalty box.

On Frank Kovacs:
Frank Kovacs was the Bull of the Pup Line. Very strong young man, even as a 16 year old. Always worked hard along the wall, in front of the net and in open ice. His raw talents improved through his 5 yrs with the Pats, to the point that he scored pretty goals in his 4th & 5th yrs. He was also a very fierce fighter when he fought. He didn't fight often, but when he did he usually Lawn Mowered the other guy. He was the best Captain the Pats ever had---him and Rick Rypien. He was a super nice kid back then and to this day will still come up to me and have a nice conversation. He is most certainly best suited where he is right now---the Regina Police Service. I LOVE Frankie Kovacs. He is likely my most favourite Regina Pat of all time.

On Jamie Heward:
Jamie Heward was also quite skilled. Just not to the extent as Mike was. One thing about him was his HAMMER of a shot. He verpowered goalies with his shot, especially on the PP. Doug Sauter moved him to defense and he proved to excel at that position. He scored a lot of goals with the HAMMER from the point. He wasn't nearly as intense and could be conversed with in the Pen Box.

Thanks for your thoughts Ken! I told you I would get them up.

Pats/Ice Preview

From Greg Harder and his Slap Shots blog.

KOOTENAY (35-17-1-2)
at REGINA (19-29-6-1)

Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre
Radio: 620 CKRM
TV: Access 7

Key injuries: REGINA — None to report. KOOTENAY — F Steele Boomer (ankle, day-to-day); D Joey Leach (ankle, 1-2 weeks).
Overview: It’s the fourth and final meeting of the season between the Pats and Ice. Kootenay has won the previous three games by a combined score of 16-8. Regina lost twice by a 7-4 tally in Cranbrook, along with a 2-0 setback on Oct. 12 at the Brandt Centre . . . Regina will be playing its third game in four days. Kootenay has been idle since Tuesday’s 7-4 decision over the visiting Pats . . . The Ice called up Regina-born D Jeff Hubic, 16, from the midget AAA Tisdale Trojans last weekend. A fourth-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft, Hubic could see action in his third WHL game tonight and the second against his home-town club . . . Kootenay has four players with 25 or more goals this season and five with at least 50 points. The Pats have one: C Jordan Weal (28-44—72, 55), who’s tied for sixth in the league scoring race . . . Kootenay's top scorers are F Max Reinhart (27-33—60, 55 GP), LW Kevin King (26-34—60, 51), C Cody Eakin (25-30—55, 39) and LW Matt Fraser (25-30—55, 49). King potted a hat trick on Tuesday against Regina while D Brayden McNabb of Davidson had four assists. McNabb (14-38—52, 43) is the WHL’s third-leading scorer among blueliners. Regina’s Brandon Davidson (7-33—40, 55) is 10th while partner Myles Bell (11-23—34, 43) sits 15th . . . Veteran Damien Ketlo (4.21 GAA) and rookie Matt Hewitt (3.67 GAA) have been splitting Regina’s netminding duties in the second half of the season. Hewitt started the Pats' last game, a 6-2 loss in Lethbridge on Wednesday . . . Kootenay’s goalie tandem comprises starter Nathan Lieuwen (2.83 GAA) and backup Brett Teskey (2.90 GAA), a rookie from Regina.

I would call this a down week....

2 losses this week is making it tougher and tougher for the Pats to claw their way back into the playoff picture. Pats vs. Raiders: Live Blog 3rd Period

....On deck.

....1:41 Mitchell and Ruopp get off setting roughing minors. Time for some 4 on 4 play.

....2:21 Raiders get another bench minor for too many men. Pats get a 4 on 3 pp for 1:20.

....3:14 Deck gets a tripping minor giving the Pats an extended pp.

....7:32 Maylan takes a goalie interference penalty giving the Pats another pp.

....7:50 Weal negates the pp with a bad tripping call ending the Pats pp after 18 seconds.

....11:44 Hewitt gets a delay of game minor.... Interesting call to say the least. PP for the Raiders.

....17:57 Raiders make it a one goal game at 5-4. Parker with the goal Revenko and Wells pick up the assists. Bad goal by Hewitt kinda.... Parker outwaited him and Hewitt pulled away from the post and snuck it by him.

....Pats are not playing to win.... they are playing to not lose. They need to step up.

....Empty net for PA with just over a minute left.

....Pats hold on to win 5-4.

....Final shots 40-38 Raiders.

....PATS WIN!
on February 05, 2011 by Kevin Shaw |

Pats vs. Raiders: Live Blog 2nd Period

....Has started.

....I don't know but it's looking like it's going to get nasty.

....1:00 in Neigum and Ruopp exchange pleasantries after a hard hit. Neigum gets the extra two for instigating (and a 10) sending the Raiders to the man advantage. I would give Ruopp the edge.

....The Pats pick up another minor as Bidlevskii gets a slaching penalty pitting the Raiders up two for 1:11.

....Great kill. back to 5 on 5.

....Fistfights galore!! Mitchell vs. Corbin, Blidstrand vs. Hlinka. Two good scraps. Mitchell gets the advantage in his. Blidstrand stood in and chucked some bombs... Hlinka got dropped. Raiders 18 F, 24 R, 16 F GM, Pats 13 R, 10 F, 5 F GM.

....This is FUN.

....6:53 Rowley takes some huge liberties on Weal and Weal returns the favour. Rowley gets roughing and Weal gets cross checking. Some 4 on 4.

....7:55 Ruopp gets a hooking minor sending the Pats to the man advantage.

....9:22 Bell takes a slashing call on Rowley killing the powerplay. 4on4 for for just over 30 seconds then PA will go to the powerplay.

....10:44 Bidlevskii gets a slashing call and sends the Raiders to the 5on3 again!

....another great kill by the Pats.

....13:24 Raiders make it 4-2 on a screen shot goal that eludes Hewitt. Maylan gets the goal on the tip assited by Ruopp.

....14:32 Olstad restores the Pats 3 goal lead at 5-2 following up on a Weal shot and burying the rebound. Olstad gets his 7th from Weal and Mitchell.

....18:31 Raiders climb back to within 2 at 5-3 on a goal by Herle on a huge rebound given up by Hewitt. Ruopp and Deck grab the assists.

....18:58 HUGE save by Hewitt denying an almost sure goal by the Rider left winger.

....19:06 Revenko gets a hooking minor putting the Pats back up a man.

....5-3 Pats end of 2. 23-22 shots for the Raiders.

Pats vs. Raiders: Live Blog

....Hewitt gets the nod.

....Scratches announced for the Pats are Stephenson and Moser.

....As I was waiting for warmup I was asked on 3 different occasions if I thought the Pats would make the playoffs. I honestly didn't have an answer for them. I hope they make the playoffs.... I will think on this and post something later.

....First period coming up!

....Silly fight.... Martell hits Herle with what I would call a clean hit not even hard or anything.... Herle decides to ask Martell to dance and it's on 2:54 in. Martell gets a few shots in and Herle's jersey comes over the head as it wasn't tied down. Martell gets 5 and Herle gets 5 and 10.

....I think the shot clock is broken or the operator isn't pushing the button as the shots aren't being registered.

....Another fight (after a hit).... This time Bidlevskii vs. Yaworski. Good tilt with both guys getting decent shots in. It was pretty even but I would give the edge to Artem 4:49 in.

....Raiders take a too many men minor 5:48 in giving the Pats the games first powerplay. They need to capitalize.

....9:14 Raiders go up 1-0 as Hewitt got beat high blocker side (may have been screened a bit by Borstmayer) I bet he wishes he had a do over on that goal. Fiddler gets the goal Wells and Ruopp pick up the helpers.

....10:39 Mitchell gets a goalie interference minor and runs into Tucker and a few other players bumped into him as well. Tucker looked as though he got a shoulder injury but upon closer inspection he must have been cut.... they needed to scrape up what looked like blood. Williams is now in goal. Raiders to the powerplay.

....13:50 Pats tie it up 1-1 on a goal from Rieder assisted by Olstad and Weal. Hard work pays off as he beats a sprawled out Williams for his 8th of the season.

....14:32 Pats take the lead 2-1. I missed the goal but Neigum gets the goal his 9th of the season Blidstrand and Reddin pick up the apples.

....15:06 Ruopp gets a high sticking minor putting the Pats to the powerplay.

....16:54 Pats go up 3-1 on a powerplay goal by Weal his 28th of the season that beat Williams 5 hole. Davidson picks up the lone assist.

....The shot clock is now working and the shots are 12-7 in favour of the Pats.

....17:35 Bell takes a elbowing minor as he and Wells were doing a little pushing. Bell dropped him with the elbow. Raiders to the man advantage. There might be some fireworks with these two later tonight.

....18:48 Raiders bench gets a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty ending their powerplay. 4on4.

....19:42 Pats go up 4-1 on a powerplay goal by Olstad is 6th of the season who works hard and deposits his own rebound. Schneider gets the lone assist.

....First ends 4-1 Pats. 14-8 in favour of Regina on the shot clock.

....2nd coming up shortly.
