Live Blog: Pats and Warriors Third Period

On deck....

....Not much to say about this one yet. It's been a decent period with lots of flow. A couple of nice chances for the Warriors but Hewitt and the Pats are staying in this one. 34-19 shots with 8:47 left in the third.

....Davidson and Paradis take roughing minors with 2:34 left 4 on 4.

....GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! Pats tie it up with 35.5 seconds left!!!!! Weal buries the tying goal. Mitchell and Bell pick up the assists. I'm so pumped right now! It's hard to type.

....OVERTIME!

....35-26 shots on net MJ after the third.

Live Blog: Pats and Warriors Second Period

....coming up soon.

....Warriors to the powerplay 5:12 in on an Olstad holding minor.

....Pats kill the penalty but that doesn't prevent the Warriors from taking a 3 goal lead. A bad bounce off the back dasher right in front where Lyon takes advantage and puts the puck past a down and out Hewitt. Erhardt and Hood get the helpers at 7:48. 3-0.

....Pats make a game of it 9:44 in as Martell is Johnny-on-the-spot potting the loose puck. Bell and Mitchell pick up the helpers. 3-1 MJ.

....Hood takes a boarding minor at 10:31 on what looked like a serious type hit. Pats to the powerplay.

....13:37 Heemskerk takes a delay of game penalty by firing the puck over the glass. Pats to the powerplay.

....Davidson makes the Warriors pay by potting the pp goal on a wrister that eludes Heemskerk blocker side. Bell and Martell pick up the assists 15:06. 3-2 MJ.

....Ouellette takes a goalie interference call (after being chased around by Beach.... no call.... dumb). He spoke up and Cowley gave him an unsportsmanlike minor. 4 minute powerplay for the Jaw.

....So far so good on the PK.

....29-17 shots for MJ after 2.

Live Blog: Pats and Warriors First Period

....Will we have a "healthy" line-up tonight? We'll see soon.

....Looks like Hewitt returns to tend goal tonight and we have a full lineup - minus Moser and Borstmayer.

....Some new lines tonight.... starting Scheidl - Jung - Ouellette.

....Martell - Weal - Mitchell.

....Olstad - Reddin - Stevenson.

....Neigum - Stephenson - Rieder.

....Warriors take the early lead 3:58 in on a howitzer from Svendsen that he ripped low glove side past Hewitt. Looked like he wanted that one back. Bowman and McFaul pick up the helpers.

....McIlrath and Stevenson pick up unsportsmanlike minors 4:35 in. This could get interesting. 4 on 4 hockey.

....Reddin picks up a hooking minor 5:10 in giving the Warriors a 4 on 3 powerplay.

....great kill. Negated by a terrible defensive lapse by Blidstrand and Schneider. Svendsen gets the goal with Paradis picking up the assist at 7:42. 2-0 Warriors.

....We don't appear to have a backup netminder as Ketlo isn't on the bench. He did appear to be sluggish during the warmup.

....Pats take another hooking minor as Weal gets called at 14:17. MJ to the powerplay.

....McFaull takes a roughing minor with 56.8 seconds left in the first giving the Pats their first powerplay of the contest.

....17-8 shots for the Jaw.

Game Day: Pats v Warriors

MOOSE JAW (31-18-0-2)at REGINA (17-25-6-1)
Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre
Radio: 620 CKRM

Key injuries: REGINA — F Nils Moser (knee, day-to-day), C Chandler Stephenson (foot, day-to-day). MOOSE JAW — F Brayden Cuthbert (concussion, 1-2 weeks), F Spencer Edwards (shoulder, 1-2 weeks).

Overview: Tonight’s game puts a wrap on the second home-and-home matchup of the season between Regina and Moose Jaw. The Warriors swept a previous back-to-back set in early November, prevailing 3-1 at the Brandt Centre and 5-3 at the Crushed Can. The teams met again in Regina on Dec. 3, with Moose Jaw outgunning the Pats 9-6 . . . Without Edwards — a known Pat killer — the Warriors are deprived of their captain, a key offensive threat and the team’s best checker, who would likely match up against Jordan Weal’s line. Edwards has four goals and six points in three games against Regina this season. LW Antonin Honejsek leads the team with five goals and nine points in four contests versus the Pats . . . Weal leads Regina in the series with two goals and six points . . . The Warriors made one deal at the Jan. 10 trade deadline, acquiring import F Sebastian Svendsen from Prince Albert for import F Michal Hlinka, along with third- and sixth-round bantam picks . . . With Friday’s 4-3 loss in Moose Jaw, the Pats fell three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, which now belongs to the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Pats/Warriors Weekend Home-and-Home

I unfortunately missed most of Friday's broadcast but did catch some of the play by play by Dan Plaster.

It sounds like the Pats have been bitten by the flu bug and numerous players missed the game due to the bug.

From what I did hear Ketlo played rather well in net but the team just got tired in front of him and couldn't keep pace in the later stages of the game.

Here is the summary:

....51 seconds in Pats to the powerplay as Ramsay gets a minor for tripping.

....3:32 Pats again to the powerplay as Tochkin gets a hooking call.

....5:59 another Pats powerplay as Grbavac gets a goalie interference minor. If my calculations are right Pats are 0 for 7.... this is their eighth.

....6:59 Finally a powerplay tally as Mitchell buries the puck past Bunz who was down in the butterfly. Assists to Weal and Bell. 3-2 Tigers.

....8:45 Neigum takes an interference penalty going hard to the net taking out the defender. Tigers 3rd PP of the game

....8:52 Tigers capitalize. I didn't see the goal as I was typing the penalty out. Kessey from Coyle and Shinkaruk. 4-2 Tigers.

....10:11 Pats make it a 1 goal game again on a point shot by Bidlevskii which may have been tipped in past a screened Bunz. Bidlevskii gets the goal assisted by Weal and Mitchell. 4-3 Tigers.

....15:16 extra curricular activity nets Rieder and Hamilton roughing minors. Some 4on4 action.

....Pats pull Hewitt and aren't able to tie it. Just no puck luck. 33-28 shots on goal for the Pats.

....4-3 Tigers. FINAL

Live blog: Pats & Tigers Jan 25th Second Period

On deck....

....4:20 Vey gives the Tigers a 2 goal lead beating Hewitt on a rebound. Carr and Shinkaruk pick up the assists.

....6:58 Weal cuts the Tigers lead to one on a turnover by the Tigers in the defensive zone. Great work by Martell and Mitchell on the play and pick up helpers.

....7:29 Rieder takes a high sticking minor so the Tigers head to the powerplay.

....9:53 Konan "The Barbarian" takes an interference penalty putting the Pats up a man. Like it matters.... our powerplay isn't very good recently.

....12:53 Davidson and Grbavac get offsetting roughing minors. 4on4 hockey.

....18:12 Tigers reclaim the 2 goal lead as the Tiger player banks the puck in off of Hewitt from a bad angle. Shinkaruk from Vey and Etem is the scoring play.

....Shots after 2 24-22 Pats.

Live blog: Pats & Tigers Jan 25th First Period

....Hewitt vs. Bunz. The battle of 30's.

....Chris Crich and Nathan "18" Wieler are the referees.

....I know it's pretty early to say this but I'm not thinking that there will be a big crowd.

....Televised games.... blah.... 7:08 and the puck has yet to drop.

....Game On!

....4:31 Tigers take advantage of a defensive lapse and Hamilton uses his speed and gets the initial shot on net which Hewitt makes a good save and Pitlick pots the rebound. Carr gets the 2nd assist. 1-0 Tigers.

.... 4:53 Hamilton gets a holding the stick penalty taht puts the Pats on the powerplay.

....8:24 Bidlevskii blasts Pitlick with a clean hit and breaks his stick. He goes back to the Pats bench to grab a new piece of lumber and Cole Grbavac jumps Bidlevskii and fisticuffs ensue. A great tilt! Lots of great shots I will call it a draw.

....Pats get their second powerplay on a high sticking call to Vey at 8:42.

....12:02 Rieder takes a kneeing call giving the Tigers a powerplay.

....13:31 Tochkin takes a double minor for highsticking giving the Pats a powerplay in 30 seconds. 3 and a half minute powerplay for the Pats.

Pats at Broncos

Ketlo starting!

I forgot to add to this.

I listened off and on and it sounded like Ketlo played unreal. Maybe his best game as a Pat?

I'll live blog from the Pats/Canes game Saturday.

Game Night: Pats at Broncos

Notes from ReginaPats.com

Game Day - Pats & Broncos
January 21, 2011

The Regina Pats head to Swift Current tonight to take on the Broncos, puck drop at the Crediit Union I Plex tonight is 7:00pm.

Friday, January 21st (7pm) Credit Union I-Plex Regina Pats @ Swift Current Broncos

This will be the sixth time this season that the Pats and the Broncos will face each other. The Pats have won all 5 of the first meetings of the season, including all four at the Brandt Centre. The only time these two met in Swift Current was a 7-4 Pats win on October 24th.

The faces of the Swift Current Broncos:
C – Justin Dowling
The 20 year old centre is tops on the Broncos in points with 49 points and is 9th in the WHL in assists with 36.
G – Mark Friesen
The veteran 20 year old goaltender has been one of the main reasons why the Broncos are occupying the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference. He is in the WHL’s top 10 in most goaltending categories.
D – Reece Scarlett
The 17 year old defenceman is the 50th ranked North American skater on the recent NHL CSB mid-term rankings. He played in Wednesday’s CHL Home Hardware Top Prospects game in Toronto with his Team Orr winning 7-1. Scarlett is also the top defensive scorer on the Broncos with 16 points.

The Pats Story:
The Blue and white are 6-3 since coming back from the Christmas break and have crept to within striking distance of the 8th and final playoff spot. The Pats trail Prince Albert by 5 points with 3 games at hand heading into the weekend.
The Pats have been led by the goaltending of Matt Hewitt. He is 4-2 in 6 starts with a 2.72 GAA and a save percentage of .932.
The blue and white also are stellar in the shootout; winning 8 of 9 including Tuesday’s 3-2 win in Prince Albert. Jordan Weal is 8 for 9 in shootouts himself while Colin Reddin has picked up 3 shootout winners
The Pats will host the Medicine Hat Tigers on Tuesday night at the Brandt Centre.
__________
I'm wondering if Hewitt will get into both weekend games. Both are evening game and Swift isn't that far away from Regina so he could rest up somewhat before tomorrow's game vs. Lethbridge. I wouldn't be surprised to see Ketlo for one of the games this weekend.

I'm planning on listening to the game (maybe even watching it). I will post some thoughts if I do end up having the time to sit and listen to the game.

Pats @ Raiders

I got these notes from RodPedersen.com...

The Regina Pats improved to 8-1 in shootouts and kept their playoff hopes alive with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Raiders at Prince Albert's Art Hauser Centre Tuesday night.

THE STORY: The Pats were hoping to avoid a third straight loss after dropping back-to-back weekend home games. The clubs battled to a scoreless draw after the opening 20 minutes but they exchanged goals in the second frame making it 1-1 entering the third. Igor Revenko scored for P.A. and the Pats' Jordan Weal countered in the middle 20. In the third, Regina's Lynden Martell gave his squad the lead at 11:59 however a powerplay goal by the Raiders' Justin Maylan with 4:14 to go tied the contest up at 2-2 and sent it to overtime, and then a shootout. It was 20-year old Pats forward Shane Neigum who ended the game in the derby, with his second shootout winner in two weeks.

THE STATS: P.A. outshot Regina 44-39 and Pats goalie Matt Hewitt was again named the #1 star, making 42 saves ... The Pats were 0/5 on the powerplay and 2/3 killing penalties ... With the win the Pats improve to 16-23-5-1 while the Raiders drop to 19-24-2-3 ... The Pats are five points back of the Raiders for the final playoff spot. The Pats are 2-2-0 against the Raiders this season.

THE BELL TOLLS: Pats defenceman Myles Bell registered the hardest shot at 98.4 mph at the CHL Top Prospects Skills Competition Tuesday night ... The complete results are here: http://www.chl.ca/index.php/article/team-orr-wins-skills-competition-12-11-in-shootout

UP NEXT: The Pats visit the Swift Current Broncos Friday night on 620 CKRM.
_________
I listened to the game on CKRM but never really kept that close of attention to it. It sounded like a real goaltender battle and Hewitt looks to be cementing his place as starter.... Good for him.

The Pats PP seems to have disappeared over the last few games. Missing Bell last night probably didn't help all that much either.

It was nice to hear Peel's name in the lineup and sounded like he did alright for limited action. It was also Colby Williams first game in a Pats uniform and it sounded like he didn't do anything other than what was expected of him. Good job guys.

Clash Cancelled

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats Hockey Club announced this afternoon that the 4th Trans-Canada Clash between Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors alumni has been cancelled due to the Warriors inability to field a team.

The event was to be played on Saturday, January 29th 2011 at 1:00pm at the Brandt Centre.

Regina Pats Vice-President of Operations Cliff Mapes, “we are disappointed that we were forced to cancel this year’s Trans Canada Clash alumni game but I am more disappointed for the fans that look forward to this game every year. I was confident that the team we had assembled this year would have put on a very good show for the fans and lead us to our 4th straight win. We are currently working with other WHL teams that are interested in pursuing a home in home Trans Canada clash style alumni weekend and we hope to make an announcement real soon.”
The Pats alumni have won all three of the previous Trans-Canada Clashes with the games being played in front of full-houses at both the Moose Jaw Civic Centre in 2008 and 2010 and the Brandt Centre in 2009.

The weekend will not be completely void of hostilities as the Highway One rivals will face each other in their traditional late January home and home series. Friday January 28th, the Pats travel to Moose Jaw, 24 hours later on Saturday January 29th, the Pats entertain World Junior star, Quinton Howden and the rest of the Warriors at the Brandt Centre. For tickets information for this, or any Regina Pats home game, head to www.reginapats.com.

Live Blog: Pats v Rebels - Third Period

....Soon.

....Borstmayer gets called for interference at 1:58. Red Deer to the powerplay.

.... Davidson gets boarded behind the Pats goal by Elson. Stevenson jumps in and is willing to go. The gloves come off and they grab each other and both fall to the ice without a punch thrown.

....Archer picks up a delay of game penalty for shooting the puck over the glass and the Pats get a PP. I missed the time of the call.

....The Pats get a couple of opportunities 3 or 4 shots but can't buy a goal.

....Rebels make it 6 zip scoring on a bad bounce off the glass. Hewitt was laying flat to try and cover it and the Rebel grabbed the puck and shot it in the open net. Persson gets the goal Borejko and Nugent-Hopkins pick up the apples at 16:33 (I think).

....It is over! 6-0 Final. 32-24 final shots for the Rebels.

.... More thoughts.... maybe later.

Live Blog: Pats v Rebels - Second Period

....Up next. The Pats are primed to lose their cool and this could get ugly!

....The Pats are able to kill the Neigum penalty with little harm done... one shot on the PP.

....3:16 in Petrovic cranks Weal with a high chcek and Mitchell comes in to stand up to Petrovic and a good scrap ensues. No real big shots... A draw? Mitchell picks up the instigator and is tossed for 17 minutes. Davidson and Persson pick up offsetting misconduct penalties during the situation.

....Kuemper gives the Pats their first PP of the game when he played the puck outside the trapezoid (barely) 4:42 in. Yay!

....Unproductive powerplay. Missing Davidson and Mitchell doesn't help.

....We aren't winning many battles and can't seem to get any forecheck going tonight.

....Rebels Elson gets called for slashing 9:25 on a bad rather weak (bad call). Pats go to the PP.

....A minute in I thought the PP was over but the call was evened up. Bell for tripping and Archer for unsportsmanlike conduct.

....These refs are out to lunch tonight.

....Pats are not playing well at all.

....Rebels make the score 5-0 on only their 20th shot of the game 13:36 into the second. Kudrna takes advantage of very poor defensive zone play and beats Hewitt who was down and out Kambietz gets the lone assist.

....C'mon guys turn this thing around!!!

....At 14:21 Neigum decides to drop the mitts with Ferguson and the outcome isn't good for him. First Neigum gets jerseyed and Ferguson holds off andlets him get his sweater re-aligned only to get tossed to the ice shortly thereafter. Ferguson with the win.

....Red Deer Weller gets called for elbowing on a high hit on Jung. Stevenson tried to get him to go but to no avail... 15:22 in. PP Regina.

....Regina is looking very frustrated. It seems like everything they try just isn't working.

....Pats get a short 5on3 on a hooking call to Deagle. Hopefully we can capitalize.

....Nice hit by Davidson on his fellow #3 with less than 30 seconds left.

....6-5 Pats shots in the period. 20-12 overall for Red Deer.

Live Blog: Pats v Rebels - First Period

....Just underway.

....Pats scratches are Stephenson, Moser, Rieder and Pavkovich. Pats are playing with 17 skaters.

....Hanson and Iverson are the referees. Lawrence and Marshall are manning the lines.

....I was hoping there would be better officiating tonight.... I was wrong. Neigum gets a minor for boarding.... he went and muscled Dumba down and didn't even hit the boards. Red Deer on the PP.

....Pats kill the penalty but Red Deer strikes within a minute of the kill to go up 1-0 at the 7:14 minute mark. Pats are caught running around in their own zone Froese capitializes on a rebound and beats Hewitt glove side. Borejko and Weller pick up the assists.

....Looks like the Pats are lakcing jump and the penalty deflated anything they had in ways of momentum. The shot tally is 10-1 Rebels just 9 minutes in.

....Pats get a quality chance 11 1/2 minutes in and Mitchell comes close to burying the rebound but is denied by Kuemper.

....No whistles for almost 6 minutes. Weal dances in over the line and fires the puck top glove side that is snagged by the Red Deer keeper. Shots are 12-5 Rebels at the internet (tv or whatever it is) timeout.... 5:53 left on the first.

....15:02 in Red Deer takes a 2-0 lead when a screened Hewitt is beaten by a floater from the middle point. Scored by Nugent-Hopkins assists to Petrovic and Archer. I don't think Hewitt saw it.

....Pats take another minor with 2:35 left in the first. Bell is called for tripping... This could mean trouble for the Pats.

....Hewitt gets beat five hole as I was typing the last sentence (not a good goal), I'm sure he would like that one back. Froese gets the goal Petrovic and Nugent-Hopkins get the assists at 17:34.

....Petrovic and Mitchell get offsetting minors with 1:56 left in the first. Time for some 4on4.

....Hewitt allows his 4th on Red Deer's 15th shot on goal as the Rebels go up 4-0 with 1:35 left in the first. Dumba gets the goal; Kudrna and Archer get the assists. I'm not sure if Hewitt didn't see the shot (looked like he had a good sightline) but it wasn't a pretty goal, I'm sure he wants that one back.

....Man it may sound like I'm complaining but man these refs are bad! Two nights in a row.... this is brutal.
....Neigum is losing his cool and picks up a highsticking minor at the buzzer.

...15-6 shots for the Rebels after the first.

....Yikes!

Pats v Oil Kings thoughts (short)

Matt Hewitt played a good game (not as good as the game v the Blades) but just never had luck on a couple of goals. Long shifts with tired players = bad breaks. I'm starting to officially get on the Hewitt bandwagon. I hope he starts tonight.

Ty McLean had a great debut. He looks like a little pest and doesn't seem afraid to get physical and hit as many players as he could. It's too bad he was offside on a possible 4on1 (it had to be nerves).

After the game I overheard that the Pats didn't play well and that we still need new coach.... these same people said that the Pats played a great game against the Blades. Man o man.... some people.

I do think that the players didn't look all that energetic after the first 4 or 5 minutes. I honestly think that any and all momentum that was in the game was propelled byt the referees. I don't think any of the players (on either side) knew what was or wasn't going to ba called.

Full credit to the Oil Kings. They look like a machine. I'm sure that each line has interchangeable parts and they would still come in droves. They block shots and they take shots from everywhere and pounce on rebounds.

We need to get more shots! Quit trying to be so fancy and get the puck on the net!

Looking forward to the Rebels game tonight!

GO PATS GO!!

Live Blog: Pats v Oil Kings: 3rd Period

....On deck.

....This one has a little chippiness to it.... I like it.

....Pats get caught running around their zone and Edmonton makes them pay. 4:52 in. Edmonton works it around and Reners picks up the goal Lowe and Wruck get the assists. 4-1 Edmonton.

....Neigum and Bidlevskii get roughing minors at 6:53 and the teams are going to play some 4on4.

....Nothing much to report.

....Neigum looks like he wants to dance (especially with Abney) but will he get a chance? I'm kinda hoping so.

....10:29 in the shots are 35-15 Edmonton. And I don't think the Pats have had more than 1 or 2 real quality scoring chances.... or they don't shoot when they have the chance.

....Sagen takes a high sticking minor (accidental but it was there) at 13:35 giving Edmonton a PP.

....Short lived PP of 3 seconds when St. Croix takes a tripping minor to put the game 4on4.

....Pretty uneventful period other than some pushing and shoving. It feels as though the Pats have conceeded but are still battling. They seem like they are a bit baffled by the Oil Kings defence.

....13-8 shots for Edmonton. 38-20 overall.

....I will have some thoughts a bit later.

Live Blog: Pats v Oil Kings: 2nd Period

....up next!

....Oil Kings take a minor for checking from behind by Piluso. Pats to the PP less than a minute into the 2nd (:42).

....Yet another short PP in this game. Weal takes a high sticking minor 50 seconds into the PP (1:32). More 4on4.

....Pats go on the kill with 50 seconds remaining in the Weal minor.

....Oh man another chincy call. Mitchell gets a minor for tripping at 5:10 sending EDM to the powerplay.... We'll see how long this powerplay lasts....

....Pats kill it. Edmonton had a couple chances and St. Croix missed on a one timer that he shot through the crease.

....Another iffy call again on Mitchell. Slashing is the call at 9:08. Edmonton on the powerplay.

....If I'm not mistaken Gagnon has made most (if not all of the calls.... many are pretty bad on both teams). This is silly.

....Foster puts the Oil Kings up 3-1 on a pretty goal that beats Hewitt top shelf as he was down protecting the post. Reners and Hrbas pick up the assists at 10:53.

....The Pats have 2 shots 12:10 into this period.... no thanks to the officials.

....A little rough stuff along the Oil King bench... Davidson and Weal for the Pats and Laroque and Foster. for the Oil Kings each get minors. play stays 5on5.

....Shots in the period 16-5 for the Oil Kings. 25-12 overall.

Live Blog: Pats v Oil Kings: 1st Period

....Hewitt is starting.

....Opening faceoff 7:38!

....Good start... lots of speed and the Pats just miss making the game 1-0 but somehow Groenheyde kept it out.

....Neigum dances in around the Oil King defender and is stopped by the Oil Kings netminder, he grabs his own rebound and beats Groenheyde top shelf blocker side just under the crossbar. Stevenson and Jung pick up the helpers at 4:01. 1-0 Pats.

....I was just going to comment on how I was liking the Neigum-Jung-Stevenson line but Edmonton takes advantage of a long shift. Hickmott scores with Wruck and Reinhart with the assists at 7:00. 1-1.

....Martell takes an interference minor and the Oil Kings take to the PP 7:13 in.

....9:23 in The Oil Kings take advantage of a poor line change and used their speed to take a 2-1 lead. Piluso out waits Hewitt and slides it blocker side Ewanyk and van de Mosselar pick up the assists.

....Shots are 7-4 Edmonton 7:43 left in the first.

....Reddin takes a slash at 12:56 (not a great call). Edmonton goes to the PP for a second time tonight.

....That PP lasted all of 30 seconds as Hickmott takes a rather weak hooking call at 13:26. 4on4 action.

....Pats get an abbreviated PP and get no shots.

....Another not so good call gets Bidlevskii a minor for tripping at 16:59. PP #3 for Edmonton.

....Another weak call kills the Oil King PP 13 seconds in. Abney gets a hooking minor at 17:12.

....No more scoring in the period. Shots end up 9-7 for the Oil Kings.

Pats savour upset win/Hewitt quotes

From Greg Harder's LeaderPost Slap Shots blog.....

The Regina Pats were still all smiles a day after their 4-3 win over the league-leading Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday.
“As a hockey player that’s why you want to play the game,” said captain Garrett Mitchell, who scored once in regulation and added the game-winner in the shootout. “That’s kind of the marquee team in the Western Hockey League right now, especially in our conference. We showed some incredible desperation. We went down shorthanded in overtime and we played that to go into the shootout and it was a great feeling to come away with it. You look back on the first period, we were up two, obviously they’re going to push back. I thought we bent but we didn’t break. It was an awesome effort.”

Read the rest oh is post here: http://communities.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/blogs/slapshots/archive/2011/01/13/pats-savour-upset-win.aspx

Hewitt speaks
Here’s what Regina Pats goalie Matt Hewitt had to say a day after his heroic 59-save effort in Wednesday’s 4-3 win over the Saskatoon Blades . . .
On how he’s feeling: “I’m a little bit sore after a game like that. I just passed out on my bed last night. I have to say sleeping was really easy. It was a great memory I'll keep forever, but it’s pretty tiring.”
On being in the zone: “I think every player has their own mental zone. Every game you try to find it. That’s the hardest part mentally when you’re getting 62 shots in a game, you have to stick in that zone every single shot.”
On the Blades' barrage: “To be honest I don’t think I’ve had a game where I had to face 62 shots (even in minor hockey). Not even really coming close. Usually I average 30 or 40 shots. A game like that, it’s pretty intense. It’s a lot different for me coming into this league and facing that many shots. It’s quite a workout.”

....Up next.

Weal Mitchell Blidstrand Bidlevskii
Tentative shift not much going on.

Neigum Weal Bell Davidson
In our zone mostly but work the puck to get a faceoff in the Blade zone.

Scheidl Olstad Davidson Bell
Not much again. Both teams look to be playing for the tie...

Neigum Reddin Blidstrand Bidlevskii
Neigum CRANKS Zahn and gets called for a double minor for checking from behind.... 2:44 left...

I think it's over... I hope not!

Blades crash the net and Hewitt went down. Mayer comes out and checks on Hewitt I guess he's good....

SHOOTOUT

62-32 Blades!

Live Blog: Pats v Blades Jan. 12, 2011: 3rd Period

....Just started.

....Blades tie it up at 2:53 on a shot that beats Hewitt glove side (he never saw it). Goal by Stefan Elliott assisted by Stransky and Sutter. On the Blades 44th shot of the game.

....Pats regain the lead on a point shot that eludes Morrison top shelf. Bidlevskii scores his first goal as a Pat (3rd on his career) assists to Jung and Reddin at 6:15. 3-2 Pats.

....Morrison is looking a bit shaky or bored or something. He doesn't seem that into the game.

....Blades get a PP on a very questionable call to Bidlevskii with 6:08 left.... Bad call.

....Blades tie it up 13 seconds into the PP. Viedensky from Stefan Elliott and Siemens. 3-3.

....Can't type too intense!!

....OVERTIME!!

58-32 shots after three.

Live Blog: Pats v Blades Jan. 12, 2011: 2nd Period

....Just underway.

....Pats kill of the Davidson minor looking real good in doing so (especially Scheidl, great PK).

....Terrible defensive effort by the Pats leads to the Blades first goal on their 28th shot on goal. Sutter cashes in beating a sprawled out Hewitt glove side.... Collins picks up the lone assist. 6:26 into the second. 2-1 Pats.

....Pats pick up a PP on a Nicholls high sticking penalty.

....So much for that PP. The Blades owned the play and probably had 3 shots on Hewitt.

....Pats pick up another PP 10:54 into the period as Cox gets a checking from behind minor. Hopefully they can capitialize.

....Better PP but unable to to get one by Morrison.

....Neigum gets a double minor for high sticking at 13:18.... this could get interesting.... The amount of bleepity-bleeps coming from the penalty box was hilarious.

....Pats kill of the double minor! Blades had numerous chances and just couldn't get one past Hewitt.

....Shots after 2 41-19 Blades!!

Live Blog: Pats v Blades Jan. 12, 2011

....Hewitt gets the nod tonight!

....Starting lineup for the Pats Martell with Weal and Mitchell... Davidson and Bell on D.

....Nice to see a moment of silence for scouting legend Bill Maluta.

....A bit of a holdup as the smoke machine went a little overboard and it's pretty difficult to see.

....Officials are Saurer, Klein wering the orange stripes and Dufour and Kuffner calling the lines.

....7:06 opening faceoff.

....Looking at the lineup the Pats have only dressed 17 skaters.

....Pats take advantage of some sloppy defensive coverage and take the puck to the net. Martell converts a rebound off of a shot from Weal. Mitchell picks up the second assist. 1-0 Pats at 3:09 of the first.

....Scheidl picks up a high sticking penalty at 5:02... Blades on the PP.

....Good kill by the Pats. Saskatoon has themselves a PP that could be deadly.... best chance was Weal on a partial breakaway when the Blades dman stick broke at the right point. Weal just missed the far corner.

....Pats go the the PP when Stefan Elliott is called for a high stick at 9:51.

....Pats go up 2-0 on a PP goal by Mitchell on a great individual effort. It looked as though Mitchell was going to get cranked at the blueline but two Blade players missed Mitchell and he weaved his way into the slot and ripped a shot glove side past Morrison. Weal and Blidstrand pick up the assists at 10:41.

....Davidson takes a interference minor with 23.7 seconds left. Blades go on their 2nd PP.

Shots after 1 are 22-13 Saskatoon. Hewitt is standing on his head!

Where oh where did Roznik go?

I was just looking at the Pats roster on their website and it appears as though Juraj Roznik has disappeared. There is no mention of him being released or leaving. I guess we will find out sooner than later.

It also looks as though Ty McLean has been called up. He's listed wearing sweater #32.

Game Day - Pats & Blades

January 12, 2011

The Regina Pats welcome the number one team in the WHL to the Brandt Centre tonight, as the Saskatoon Blades visit the Queen City. Puck drop is 7:00pm.

The Lowdown
This is the 3rd of 6 meetings between the Pats and the Blades this season. These two teams have split the first two games with the Blades winning at home on October 2nd with the Pats taking the last meeting way back on October 26th, 5-2 at the Brandt Centre. The Pats had a 4 game winning streak snapped on Saturday in Edmonton, but have won 5 of their past 7 games and are 4 points back of Prince Albert for the final playoff spot in the Easter Conference

Bridge City Bits:
The Blades made the biggest splash on Monday’s WHL’s trade deadline by acquiring World Junior MVP, Brayden Schenn from the Wheat Kings in exchange for 2 prospects, 2 1st round bantam picks, a 2nd round bantam pick and a 1st round Import Draft Pick. He will join fellow Canadian World Junior, Curtis Hamilton on the club. The Blades are, by far, the top team in the WHL and are currently ranked 4th in Canada.

Who’s who:
Saskatoon:
C – Brayden Schenn – The 5th overall pick of the LA Kings in 2009 played 8 games with the Kings this season before heading back to the WHL. Lead World Jr. Hockey Championship in scoring.
LW – Curtis Hamilton – The 2nd round pick of the Oilers played for Canada at recent World Jr. Hockey Championships and is 4th in team scoring
D – Stefan Elliott – The 2nd round pick of the Avalanche is 2nd in team scoring and one of the top defencemen in the WHL.

Regina:
LW – Lane Scheidl – The 18 year old has goals in 2 of the past three games and is tops on the Pats in +/-.
G – Matt Hewitt – The 18 year old rookie goaltender won his 6th game Friday night in Red Deer and has raised his save percentage to .904
D – Brandon Davidson – The Oiler draft pick is 2nd on the Pats in scoring and has paired with Myles Bell to form the team’s top shut down defensive pair.

Shoot out specialists:
The Pats have gone to a shoot out 7 times this season and have won 6 including a 10 round affair on Friday night in Red Deer. Jordan Weal is 6/7 in shoot outs, while Colin Reddin is 5/7.

Top Prospect:
17 year old Regina Pats defenceman, Myles Bell has will be playing in the CHL Home Hardware Top Prospects game on January 19th at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. The Pats have been well represented over the past few seasons:
2010: Jordan Weal – Team Cherry
2008: Colten Teubert, Jordan Eberle – Team McDonald/Vernon

Next Action:
The Pats will continue a three game home stand on Friday night as the Pats host the Oil Kings on Mike Sillinger jersey retirement night. Puck drops at 7pm and for ticket information, head to www.reginapats.com.

From ReginaPats.com and the desk of Dan Plaster (I'm assuming).

Another roster move?

From Gregg Drinnan's Taking Note:

The Pats have assigned F Michael Sagen, 17, to the Melville Millionaires. Sagen, who has one goal in 17 games, will spend this week with Regina and then join the Millionaires
_________
He still appears on the Pats roster (like it says "for the rest of the week").... Mr. Drinnan is usually right on with any sort of roster move. I would assume that they are waiting for Nils Moser to get healthy before the transaction occurs.

Tanner Olstad scored midway through the 2nd to make it 1-0, but the Rebels Byron Froese tied it in the third. Overtime solved nothing, and the shootout went 10 players deep until Shayne Neigum scored the winner for the 2-1 victory. Matt Hewitt stopped 40 of 41 Rebels shots and 9 of 10 in the shootout for his 6th win of the season.

Saturday January 8th Regina Pats 1 @ Edmonton Oil Kings 7
The Edmonton Oil Kings scored early and often en route to a 7-1 win over the Regina Pats. Lane Scheidl's second as a Regina Pat was the lone marker, while a trio of fights dotted the 3rd period. The Oil Kings have won all three of the meetings this season with a combined score of 23-7.

Myles Bell was just recently ranked 37th among North American skaters according to NHL CSS. He will be playing in the CHL Top Prospects game on January 19th.

Through the looking Glass:

Prospect Watch - Cory Nygaard:
The 17 year old goaltender is coming off summer knee surgery and has bounced back nicely. With the Winnipeg Wild in the Manitoba Midget Hockey League, he is 13-4 with a GAA of 2.32. At the Mac's Midget Tournament over the Christmas season in Calgary, he went undefeated at 3-0

A look to the Past - Myles Stoesz:
The rugged 6'2" forward finished his WHL career with the Regina Pats in the 2006-07 season and began the first three years of pro in the ECHL. He caught a break at the tail end of last season when he played 35 games with the AHL's Lowell Devils. This season with the Albany Devils of the AHL he has been in 7 games, recording 30 minutes in penalties

Interesting quote...

from Greg Drinnan's Taking Note, which can be found here.

It was a year ago when the Regina Pats were surrounded in speculation -- would they trade F Jordan Eberle or D Colten Teubert? Teubert had been selected by the Los Angeles Kings with the 13th overall pick of the 2009 NHL draft; Eberle went to the Edmonton Oilers with that draft’s 22nd pick.
In the end, Parker, who was the Pats’ general manager, hung on to both Eberle and Teubert.
Yesterday, I asked Parker if he had received any offers close to what Kootenay paid for Cody Eakin or what Saskatoon coughed up for Brayden Schenn.
Parker, now the Pats’ president, responded: “Not even close to it, and that was for both of our guys.”
_________
Makes me wonder what was actually on the table during the 2010 deadline.

Update

I don't have much to say about Saturday's game at Edmonton as I only caught the first period.

I was surprised to hear that Ketlo was in net... Especially after the show Hewitt put on Friday night. It sounded like Ketlo let in a couple of weak goals in the first and it went downhill from there. I don't know if Hunt didn't want to throw Hewitt to the wolves or what.... Edmonton has destroyed us in all three contests this year.

Just when I think the team has turned the corner they go and hit the curb and now we have to wait to see if they get totally off track or if they can bounce back. I think they can bounce back and make something of the rest of the season.

D-Day Dud....

As everyone already knows the Pats dealt Mitch Spooner to Seattle for a 5th round pick (conditional). I think Mitch is a decent WHLer and I wish him all the best in Seattle.

I really was expecting Chad to make a move or two but I'm okay with what he's done and is doing with the Pats. I think that the ship is heading in the right direction. I just hope he is around for the next while when we are contenders.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow night's tilt vs. the top ranked Blades.

Win or lose I'm getting more excited about this team.... and I'm not sure why.

GO PATS GO!

Regina Pats GM ready to pull trigger on trade if needed

Regina Pats GM ready to pull trigger on trade if needed

By GREG HARDER, Leader-Post January 7, 2011

REGINA — The clock is ticking towards Monday's WHL trade deadline and Regina Pats general manager Chad Lang is ready to get in the game.

Unfortunately, the ball isn't in his court.

Lang, like many fellow GMs, is to some extent forced to play a waiting game while teams like the Brandon Wheat Kings and Swift Current Broncos ponder what to do with their elite players — world junior MVP Brayden Schenn and fellow Team Canada star Cody Eakin, in particular. The Kootenay Ice and Saskatoon Blades are among the suitors, with both clubs making it clear they want to make a splash at the deadline.

Meanwhile, the popular theory suggests that once the first blockbuster trade is completed, the rest of the dominoes will begin to fall.

Pats @ Rebels

I was out last night and listened to as much of the game as I could and it sounded like a pretty decent game other than the Power Play situations. Red Deer had a 5on3 and a 4on3 for extended periods of time.

Sounded like Matt Hewitt had a great game stopping 40 of 41 in regulation and only allowing 1 goal in 10 tries in the shoouout. He didn't even get first star.... really?

I wonder how badly Rieder got his bell rung? It didn't sound good when he was being helped off the ice.

I unfortunately didn't catch the name of the colour commemtator last night but man it was nice to hear a two man team on the radio. I mean this as no slight to Dan (getting better each game) but having someone for him to talk to from a neutral-ish standpoint was nice.

Call of the night....
Dan: "That was a BAD call!"
Colour guy: "Okay Dan, tell us how you really feel."

I got a chuckle out of that one.

10 rounds in the shootout is insane.... After Weal and Reddin shot I was wondering who would shoot next... I got my answer.... Bell.... and it went on with each choice until Neigum ended it. A friend of mine said Neigum was going to score the winner.... hey, they were right.

That's it for now.

Later.

Edit: One thing that I forgot to mention about the game.... During the third period I wasn't sure who was actualy playing goal for the Pats. One shot it was Hewitt... next save was Ketlo... then it wasw Hewitt... this happened a few times. I guess that's the trouble having two different netminders playing regularly. Sorry Dan.... I found it funny.

Odd news from a former Pat

J.D. Watt leaves Abbotsford Heat
Vancouver Sun January 5, 2011

VANCOUVER — Rugged forward J.D. Watt, a former star with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants, has left the Abbotsford Flames and his contract has been terminated, the NHL’s Calgary Flames announced Wednesday.

“J.D. notified us on Monday that he was no longer interested in pursuing his career with the Calgary Flames organization,” Flames acting general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement. “He informed us of his decision and as a result, he was then suspended and cleared unconditional waivers this morning. We are moving forward in the best interests of the hockey club, our players in Abbotsford and the Flames organization.”

I'm sure you have noticed

That I have switched my blog around a bit. I like the new left hand side format.

I am going to change some of the graphics.... especially the header.... as it is rather large and it seems to take a while to load up. I'll probably make it smaller and change it up a bit. I removed the background with Sobchuk and Sillinger just due to download issues (especially using mobile browsers). I'm going to tweak it a bit but I'm not going to go all out (I don't think.... I've changed the blog so many times but I can't seem to find a format that I really like).

For those of you using your mobile browsers I have activated the mobile widget and it should load up really fast. You do have an option to change to the full version if you scroll down to the bottom of the page. I have to admit that I really like the mobile option. It's fast. The only problem is that you don't get the links and the blog archive. Although I am looking into it.

Update

Man it’s been one of those weeks….. back to work after having two weeks off…. month end…. year end…. utter craziness at work. But the week is now all but over and it looks like I missed a couple of events in Patville. And with the sad news of Bill Maluta passing away just made my week that much worse. Hopefully the weekend is better.

….. I see that the Pats are having a all-star type skills competition with media types and a pee wee team being involved that should be fun. I’m hoping to attend. In all honesty I’m wondering who has the hardest shot on the Pats. To think about it I’m also curious who’s faster Lee Jones or Rod Pedersen…. Haha.

More information can be found here: http://reginapats.com/article/prairie-mobile-pats-skills-competition

….. Dane Muench being re-assigned doesn’t surprise me one bit. Once he was hurt he didn’t seem to be able to get himself back into the lineup especially with the moves that GM Lang has made. I wish Dane all the best.

You can read more here: http://reginapats.com/article/pats-re-assign-muench

I’m looking forward to listening to the game tonight. I want to see if the Pats TEAM can keep things rolling and keep the ship going in the right direction.

Pats @ Rebels tonight!

I see we have a few injuries…. Moser is out with a knee injury (day-to-day)…. Pavkovich is out with a concussion (indefinite)…. Stephenson (leg) is out with a leg injury (day-to-day). But I think the rest of the kids can pick it up until these guys are healthy.

I’d post all the game notes but you can just check the Pats website here: http://reginapats.com/article/pats-hit-the-road

I will have more as the day/weekend goes on.

Thanks for reading.

GO PATS GO!!!

Sad Day For The Pats

Pats Mourn the Loss of Scouting Legend

Regina, Saskatchewan – With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, The Regina Pats are sadden to announce the passing of long time scout Bill Maluta. Bill passed away earlier this morning at the Brandon Regional Hospital, he was just 8 days shy of his 86th birthday.

Pats President Brent Parker – “ We are all deeply saddened by the news this morning of Bill’s passing. He was a tremendous individual and he will be missed greatly by all of us. I don’t know anyone else like him and we will all miss his endless stories that were usually shared over a night cap. There is no doubt that the hockey world is a poorer place today without Bill in it ”

Arrangements have not yet been made, we will pass along this information at a later date.

Live blog: Jan. 2/11 Pats v Hitmen: Shootout

Hitmen shoot first...

Foucalt > No goal
Stopped by Ketlo

Weal > GOAL
Slick move outwaits Snider

Bubnick > GOAL
Nice backhander beats Ketlo top shelf

Reddin > GOAL
Beauty move beats Snider top shelf glove side

Sylvester > No goal
Runs out of real estate and Ketlo easily stops him with the glove.

PATS WIN 4-3!!!

Live blog: Jan. 2/11 Pats v Hitmen: Overtime

First group of four....

Olstad, Mitchell, Schneider and Blidstrand....
No chances, no mistakes.

Other groupings as OT went on......
Weal, Reddin, Davidson and Bell....
A couple of chances but close doesn't count.

Neigum, Jung, Schneider and Blidstrand....
Nothing; played in the d zone most of the shift.

Scheidl, Mitchell, Davidson amd Bell....
Short shift until an offensive faceoff.

Hitmen call a timeout with 2:02 left.

Weal, Reddin, Blidstrand and Bell....
Offensive faceoff lost and get little pressure.

Hitmen ice the puck

Olstad, Mitchell, Davidson and Schneider....
Nothing happening here; offside and another line change.

Jung, Neigum, Blidstrand and Bell....
Not a good shift almsot lost it there.

Weal, Reddin, Schneider Davidson....
Defensive zone faceoff won by Weal but no scoring chances.

Shots in OT were 1-1. Overall 33-29 Pats. Shootout is next!

Live blog: Jan. 2/11 Pats v Hitmen: 3rd period

Coming up!

Sorry for the delay in the third period post.... I've been eating ice cream.

I don't know if Calgary is laying back or not but it looks like the momentum has swung the Pats way to start the third.

At 5:01 Tyler Borstmayer netted his first career goal on a wrist shot from just outside the circle beating Snider blocker side. Mitchell and Olstad pick up the assists. Pats are making a game of it now. 3-2.

The Pats have started winnng faceoffs and has led to winning more battles. The game is in their grasp.... I hope.

The Pats are getting sloppy and the Hitmen are taking the play to them. Talk about momentum swings.... not many shots but they have the play. The mo' keeps a swinging.

Pats go on the pp with 7:17 left when Cheek is called for holding.

The pp ammounted to nothing.

But as the Hitmen player stepped out of the box Jordan Weal tied it up firing in a rebound on a soft shot thrown on the net with 5:16 left. Reddin and Bell pick up the assists. 3-3.

Sloppy play for the next four minutes leads to numerous scoring chances at both ends. No one takes the lead before the 60 minutes is up. Overtime is needed.

32-28 shots for the Pats.

Live blog: Jan. 2/11 Pats v Hitmen: 2nd period

Scrambly play to start the second for the Pats and the Hitmen nearly take advantage. The Pats are getting sloppy and it's starting to show.

The Hitmen have taken the momentum and taken over the play somewhat.

The Pats deployed their grind line of Neigum-Jung-Rieder and they are too much for the Hitmen to handle and keep the play in Calgary's zone for a good while.

The Pats feel as though they have scored to tie it as the puck went in high off of Mitchell and ref Williams waved it off. Upstairs we go 5:30 into the period.

NO GOAL. Mitchell is adamant that it went in off of his chest. He argues to no avail.

The Pats get a little bit grouchy and take the next shift over. Martell ties it on a rebound low short side getting his second goal of the season at 5:48. Reddin and Weal pick up the assists. 1-1.

Pats go on the powerplay as the Hitmen are called for too many men on the ice at 8:52.

The Pats Reddin gets called for a unfortunate cross check at 9:39 ending the Pats pp early. I would call it questionable... but I'm a bit biased.

Hitmen take back the lead on a bad play by Pats 4 man unit. Berg steps out of the penalty box and receives a pass from Kirsch and goes in 2-on-1. Berg appears to be trying to pass it over but Bell makes a play for the puck and it defelcts off of Bell's stick glove side past Ketlo. 2-1.

As I was typing that last bit Calgary wins an offensive zone faceoff and the puck goes into the slot and Sylvester beats Ketlo with a wrister glove side. Kirsch picks up anothe assist. who was partially screened. 3-1.

The Pats are either having trouble winning faceoffs or Calgary is extremelt good at winning them.

Reddin has taken Mitchell's spot with Weal and Martell on the top line.
Mitchell is with Olstad and Scheidl.

The Hitmen's Schmidt takes an interference penalty with 29.9 seconds left. They can't get organized and get no shots. 1:31 PP left to start the third.

24-22 shots for the Pats.

Live blog: Jan. 2/11 Pats v Hitmen

Starting lineup for the Pats:
Neigum at left wing Jung at center Rieder at right wing
Blidstrand and Schneider anchoring the starting 'd'
Ketlo between the pipes

Quick start to this one... just 3:59 into the first the Pats are outshooting the Hitmen 4-3.

Snider's handling the puck like a grenade... The Pats need to keep shooting from everywhere. But he's stopping the difficult ones with ease.

Rieder takes a cross checking penalty 7:30 into the first. He was trying to outrace the defender but unfortunately got too much of him leading to an obvious call.

Hitmen on the PP.

Pats kill it off surrendering only 2 shots limiting the Hitmen to mostly outside chances.

Radio timeout 11:57 into the first. Not much to report... both teams are playing hard and seem to be fairly evenly matched up. Shots are 8-6 Pats.

MacKenzie takes a high-sticking penalty at 15:23 giving the Pats their first PP.

The Pats were unable to capitialize but had a couple of nice chances.

Fast period....

Ouellette takes a questionable high sticking penalty 18:42 into the first.... Calgary goes on the PP for the 2nd time.

The puck looked like a baseball and was popped up into the air on several occassions and the puck somehow found its way onto the tape of Kirsch and he's able to bury the puck with 1.2 seconds left in the period to give the Hitmen a one goal lead. MacKenzie and Fiddler pick up the assists.

Shots after the first 13-12 for the Pats.

It's pretty hard to type and watch the game as I'm not a very fast typer. Second period updates won't be as often depending on the action.

First period intermission... The good old standby.... find K9. The contestant found him with out much problem.

I will be back for the 2nd period.

Live blog: Pats v Hitmen Jan.2/11 (pre-game)

Looks as though the Pats are going to use the same lineup as last night.... except in net. Ketlo is getting the nod. Looks to be Snider for the Hitmen.

Pats scratches appear to be Roznik, Stephenson, Moser, Sagen, Bidlevskii (the Pats line-up handout is missing Borstmayer).

I wasn't paying that much attention but it looked as though the lines are going to be:
Martell-Weal-Mitchell
Scheidl-Olstad-Reddin
Neigum-Jung-Rieder
Muench-Ouellette-Stevenson

Davidson-Bell
Borstmayer-Blidstrand
Pavkovich-Schneider

Referees are Chris Crich and Chad Williams.

Pats v Raiders New Years Day Thoughts

Well I did have wireless connectivity last night (thank you DP) but I wasn’t really prepared to blog during the game.... I will keep a live blog tonight during the Pats/Hitmen game; that should be fun.

Comments on the game....
Matt Hewitt probably had his strongest game in the Pats net. Despite bowled over and hacked numerous times. He totally held his composure and the Pats seemed to build confidence with each save he made. The only goal he let in was on a ridiculous bounce that just seemed to elude the Pats defenders and Hewitt. He totally deserved the first star.

Jamie Tucker the Raiders’ starter seemed to have a chip on his shoulder the whole game. It looked like he was being beaked the whole game and was beaking back. Neigum looked as though he got under Tuckers’ skin bad. I loved when he came out to challenge Mitchell along the boards and body checked him. It was funny to see a goalie throw a hit like that. He made some pretty impressive saves but his head wasn’t in it at all.

Props to the Pats defence, especially Davidson and Bell. Both guys played north of 30 minutes. When the Raiders decided to press they went with 2 lines and Hunt matched his lines and it worked. I hope I’m not getting my hopes up too high but I think that the Pats are starting to come together and will make a playoff run. That would be HUGE.

I was happy to see Dane Muench back in the line-up. Although he was on a line with Ouellette and Stevenson (4th line).... he had two quality scoring chances.... One on a breakaway where he had Tucker beat but shot it wide. Shortly after that shift he was wide open in front of the net, had the goalie down and redirected the puck just wide. He could have sealed the game for the Pats. If he keeps getting opportunities he will put the points up.

The officiating was yet again questionable at best. Led by #23 Byblow... I thought that the more experience you get the better you are at something. He isn’t getting any better at all. The five minute major for the Raiders was a bad call.... I don’t think that he meant to bowl over Hewitt. I only saw the replay on the big board and it definitely looked as though the Raider player was looking for a pass and lost where he was on the ice. If it was a genuine running I’m sure that Dyson Stevenson would have done more than push him along the wall. I think that the call was to get the Raider out of the game so that there wasn’t any more shenanigans. The goalie interference call on Mitchell felt like a total make up call for the five minute major. I don’t get how the Raider didn’t get a instigator penalty when he flew in after Mitchell. Mitchell won that scrap. I hopefully covered all of that.... end of my rambling.

Garrett Mitchell was sure on fire.... crunching hits (one that even winded himself), scoring opportunities, getting hit by the goalie and scrapping it up. He had a really good game.

Jordan Weal is an exciting player to watch and I’m glad he’s a Pat. I hope he’s a Pat once January 11th rolls around.

I really like Shayne Neigum and what he brings to the Pats. He had a nice goal beating Tucker five hole. He chirped at whoever would listen and I think he got under a few Raiders’ skin. Especially Tucker. He seemed to be somewhat focused on Parker and if I’m not mistaken Parker was held off the score sheet (after having 9 points in the three previous games).

Tanner Olstad seems like a little chirper that isn`t afraid to get involved even though he`s barley 5`7. He netted his first goal as a Pat on a nice drive to the net beating Tucker low glove side (far side) along the ice just inside post. He looked like he was talking and talking a lot on the ice.

Curtis Hunt looked a lot looser on the bench. He didn`t look like he wanted to pull his hair out last night. The Pats kept the turnovers down.... although there were a few the players seemed like they were held accountable and totally played as a team. Hunt is going to have a choice as to who will start tonight. I think Hewitt deserves to get the nod but It wouldn`t surprise me that Ketlo gets the start.

I myself feel more confident with Hewitt in net, but after seeing how Olivier Roy played for Canada against Sweden I am getting a bit more confidence in Ketlo.... But that’s me.

That`s all for now.

Like I said I`ll be blogging live at the game! Puck drop is at 6!

Two players, Morgan Klimchuk (1st rd, 2010) and Mitchell Fyffe (list) played in the tournament all-star game.
