Pats Home Game #10

Pats ticket game #10 - Brandon Davidson
on October 30, 2010 by Kevin Shaw |

I just noticed....

That I never posted my thoughts from the Pats/Blades game and I have now moved on.

A quick couple of thoughts...
..... Damien Ketlo is playing like a top tier goalie.... hopefully he keeps it up.

..... Jordan Weal is legit. 22 points in 14 games is pretty impresive.

..... Carter Ashton is finally playing as big as his frame. He has been great this year (has had some lapses) and is getting better.

..... I was surprised to see an AP in the lineup Brayden Serafini.... in his couple shifts he looked like he fit (where/when did we get this kid?).

..... Our defence has been playing amazing the last few games. Was the key Bidlevskii? Schneider? Both? everyone seems to be in sync now and it's nice to watch.

I will have some thoughts from the Pats/Chiefs game.... I wont forget this time.

A couple of quick thoughts from Sunday's game

It's nice to see the Pats get their 4th win of the season and they need to keep it up and try to get back to respectability. The weird thing is that 3 of them are against the Broncos.

I listened to the game but never had the chance to listen too closely to it so I can't comment on too many aspects. Seven different scorers is a thing a beauty. They are showing that they are a TEAM. Hopefully they can keep it up.

I'm getting pumped up to see how they match up against the Blades.

Post game thoughts

Damien Ketlo had his best game as a Pat and was rewarded with the shutout. I have to give him credit for making the saves when they were needed. Great game by Damien picking up his first career shutout (crazy thing.... if you look at the WHL website it says that he had seven last year and 2 the year before.... I'm thinking that is a typo.

I would also have to say that Carter Ashton played his best game of the season. He just seems so snake bitten.... he's going to break out of his funk (I know he had a snipe tonight) and start lighting it up. Another good game by his line mate Thomas Frazee but he too seems snake bitten so many chances but not much to show for it.

I'm really liking Colin Reddin's edge he brings to the game.... he's fast and chippy and has some amazing hands. I honestly think that we have a Greg Pankewicz #2 on the Pats.... Dyson Stevenson. Anyone remember Panky? Dyson is a very similar style of player (maybe not as many goals but he's young).

People who saw the game can take what they want from it so I won't get into saying much about individual players other than what I've typed already.

I would have to say that the Pats played a full 60-ish minute effort tonight and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Tons of effort by the whole team tonight.

I've been a bit critical of coach Hunt (as have many people on message boards, around the rink, on blogs) but I think that he coached a really good game. He got everyone involved in the game early and often. In the third period he even only shortened his bench by two players (Peel and Sagen) and it didn't appear that too many were double shifted. I like the fact that Ouellette, Rieder, Peel and Pavkovich are getting duty on the PK (some more than others) and it keeps them in the game and keeps the top guys fresher. I'm also liking the fact Stephenson is on the PP this kid is fast and knows what he's doing with the biscuit.

One more thought.... Jordan Weal was by far the best player out there tonight. Man that kid is all over the place and if he could cash in on his chances he could have had at least 3 or 4 goals the last couple of games.

That's it for tonight,

Kev

Notes

....Spirited tussle between Dyson Stevenson and Jordan Peddle. Lots of good shots.... I won't call a winner.... It was a good scrap.

....Former Pat Killian Hutt was awarded a Penalty Shot at the 3:17 mark.... I was worried but Ketlo played it perfectly and was able to keep it out of the 4x6.

....The shots are not indicative of the period. Swift out shot the Pats 21-6. If the Pats would shoot more on their PP the shots would be a lot closer.

....I'm concerned with the Pats PP.... I wonder if the Pats hired Jim Daly to coach our special teams (I'M KIDDING).... The cross ice pass through the crease is NOT working.... I'm sure they are aware and trying to fix it but seriously players like Weal have the puck in the slot but he's trying to pass off to Ashton or Frazee.... He needs to shoot.

Short and sweet.... I will be back after the game.

More Notes

....I know I'm going to jinx it but the first period was probably the best the Pats have played. Shots are 10-2.

....I think Art Bidlevskii is one of Chad Lang's key acquisitions. He may be a defensive player but methinks that is what the Pats needed. So far he's plus 1.

....Landon Peel was out on the PK.... Good for him. He's done good. Tyler Pavkovich should be a regular.

....The powerplay had lots of time and opportunities but seemed to 'out-cycle' themselves and not get enough shots to the net.

....I have a new pet peeve at Pats games: when the PA announcer asks people to rise for the anthem.... They don't ask people to remove their head wear.... I understand that people should know to take their hats off as a respect thing for or men and women of the armed forces.... But some need a reminder. I know lots of people don't care but c'mon take your hat off. That's the end of my mini-rant.

Hopefully the Pats can keep it up. I'll check in next intermission.

Notes (Early)

....Man it sounds weird having 'The Hedgehog' Chad Jeremy doing the public address announcing.

....After having some technical difficulties last game it looks like they were able to get the video screen working.... Now will the mic work for the anthem singer? Mic worked.... Yay.

....Man it's cold in the rink tonight.... Great night to wear shorts.... Haha.

....Starters for the Pats Ketlo, Davidson, Pavkovich, Reddin, Ouellette and Mitchell.

....Referees are Knorr and Wieler and on the lines Kuffner and Nernberg.

.... D pairings switched up... I guess I can't go by warm-ups. 5-6 and 44-3 are the early pairings.

....Man I never realized how hard it is to type on a BlackBerry with big thumbs.

More to come in a bit.

Pre-game Notes/Thoughts

Art Bidlevskii is making his Pats debut tonight wearing #55.

Looks like Sparrow and Spooner are out... Peel and Bidlevskii are in on D.

Lines during warm-up (in no particular order of line combos):

Forwards
Reddin-Ouelette-Mitchell
Rieder-Jung-Stevenson
Ashton-Frazee-Weal
Stephenson-Sagen (had multiple wingers)

Defence
Blidstrand-Davidson
Schneider-Bidlevskii
Pavkovich-Bell
Peel (had different d partners)

Goaltenders
Ketlo - starts
Hewitt - backup

Note: Derek Tendler isn't dressed for the Broncos. Hutt is wearing his familiar #18 (for those of you that didn't already know) but unfortunately I missed what line he was skating with tonight.

It's pre-game and man this place is quiet! Hardly anyone here at all and it's not looking promising as there is hardly any foot traffic on the concourse.

Pats Home Game #8

Ticket Stub - Garrett Mitchell Pictured
on October 22, 2010 by Kevin Shaw |

Short and quick post tonight

Well I have to give the Pats (most of them at least) some props from the game last night.

Damien Ketlo probably had one of his best games as a Pat last night. I'm thinking that he's either secured a spot as the starter or the Pats are trying to showcase him.... time will tell.

What's up with Dawson Guhle? Has he fallen out of grace with the Pats? Not even the back-up anymore? I hope they get the goalie situation figured out soon.

I think that Blidstrand has played his way out of the top 4 on the Pats back end (-11 in 10 games.... I'm sorry.... it's terrible). Bell, Davidson and Schneider are the top 3..... Pavkovich who was playing great last night got the nod over Sparrow, Blidstrand and Spooner in the third period (Spooner played some). Pavkovich is a shut down d just like the Pats were wanting.

I feel sorry for Thomas Frazee.... man o man no luck last night at all. Could have easily had 4 goals.

Weal as well just couldn't get it going.... so close but yet so far away.

I have to give Hunt some credit last night for playing the forwards all through the game (save for Sagen). The team needs to play as a team not not be carried by 1 or 2 players.

Carter Ashton to me is an anomaly.... He's such a good hockey player but for some reason just doesn't seem to have "it" this year. The guy could be a killer power forward in the league but I can't put my finger on it.... maybe it's the system? I dunno.

That's it for tonight.

I'm looking forward to seeing Art Bidlevskii in the lineup this weekend (I hope).

I'm Back

I decided I needed a bit away from The Blueliner as I was starting to run out of things to say about how the team has been playing. I'm hoping that this can be a "fresh" start and I hope that the team can right the ship.

I can tell you this much..... It hasn't been all that exciting this year at the Brandt Centre. It's not the loudest place to have a game but recently it's been terrible. There is little to no atmosphere it's been just a blah season so far. Tonight is game #7 and I hope that the Pats put up a good effort and maybe get the crowd into the game.... No wait a minute.... if the crowd gets too loud they are told to shut up because they are too loud.... Grrr..... I'm done for now.

I  will post lineups and scratches as long as my phone lasts me tonight.

Peace,

Kev

Borstmayer re-assigned

to Melfort of the SJHL.

In my opinion with the amount of icetime that he received last year (early this year) it came almost a year too late. I hope for Tyler's sake he gets the proper ice he deserves and comes back and shows the Pats what he can do next year.

Thoughts.... Short and sweet

I'm not even going to mention last weekends games because they weren't great ones to watch.
_________
I'm starting to really like the Carlson for Bidlevskii deal. The Pats are getting something that they want/need and I can't wait to see Art in the lineup. Heal up quick!
__________
I can sum up the RD/Pats game in one word: Disappointing! It was such a good game to watch but it was disappointing to see the Pats implode on themselves in the third.

The Pats totally had the game in their grasp but for some reason the grasp got a bit loosened and Red Deer took advantage (might I say that RD is a pretty darn good team). The officiating was questionable at best... called a lot of iffy penalties and missed some blatant ones on both sides of the rink.... I'm not sure what he was watching out there at times. Bell and Weal are awesome parts of the team. Frazee is getting better each game. Guhle is facing some unfair criticism in my opinion. Davidson probably played 35+ minutes and was good. Peel, Stephenson and Jung are getting better shift by shift.
__________
What is up with Ashton? Is he trying to fight his way off the team? He's supposed to be scoring goals and crashing and banging not fighting all the time. Ok one of his scraps he was standing up for our 16 year old (by fighting another 16 year old). He sits in the box for 22 minutes.... what good is he doing? I wish he would channel his energy and get going offensively.
__________
That's it for tonight. time for some shut eye.

Peace.
