Thoughts

Pats lines for the majority of the game:

Muench-Weal-Frazee
Ashton-Reddin-Hutt
Gustafsson-Ouellette-Mitchell
Jung-Stephensen-Rieder

Blidstrand- Bell
Davidson-Carlson

Sparrow and Peel had various defensive pairings.

I'm glad the Pats were able to get this victory tonight. I don't know; it just might be me but the team seems to be lacking "puck luck" around the net. I see that the team chemistry is there it just needs time to build.... I honestly think that this team is not as bad as some people say they are.

I can't say that Ketlo had a bad outing but I can't say it was a stellar one either. Swifts second goal was a bad rebound but on the third one I don't think he saw a thing.

Guhle came in an wasn't tested much in the latter half of the second with only 2 saves. In the third he had a strong period and made a couple of nice saves. I think he gets te next start.

The defence as a whole had a pretty solid game. A couple of mess ups led to a couple of chances but when the chips were on the line I think they all played fairly well.

I'm liking the forward line combos.

The Hutt-Reddin-Ashton line played really good in both ends of the ice. Hutt and Reddin picking up tallies (Reddin's was a goal when he was with Weal and Frazee.... but there was a line change going to happen when the goal happened.... but I digress).

The Muench-Weal-Frazee line was tremendous out there. Muench has so much skill and has a sweet wrist shot. Frazee works so hard and it looks like he's just getting going.... he's exactly what GM Lang said he wanted a big guy that can crash and bang. Weal was everywhere and worked hard out there... picked up two helpers but seems to be a bit snake bitten when it comes to the goal sscoring aspect. It will come.

I really liked the Gustafsson-Ouellette-Mitchell line as they seemed to really assert themselves in the game. All three are pretty speedy and all seem to like the crash and bang. They were close a couple of times.

The so-called "fourth" line of Jung-Stephensen-Rieder were the unit I was most impressed with. They didn't get tons of icetime (they got a decent amount to be honest) but whenever they were out there the puck seemed like it was in Swifts end of the rink for a majority of the time. I don't think they really had too many scoring opportunities but they did give the top forwards time to rest up.

That's all I have for tonight.... if I think of anything else I will post it tomorrow. Please feel free to comment.

Have a good one!

Home game #2

Ticket stub from Game 2

Thoughts from Sunday's game

I totally forgot to post them yesterday so most of my thoughts have been mentioned throughout a couple of blog posts and a couple of articles elsewhere in the last couple of days. So my thoughts will be short.

Ketlo had a solid game. One goal was an unbelievable deflection byt Paul Ciarelli (sp?) that I can guarantee most of if not all WHL goalies would not have been able to stop. and another was a 2-on-0 breakaway on an errant pass by one of the Pats forwards (I think Frazee).

The forward units seemed to work well at times but no one seemed to know where the other ones were going to be. I think with Ouellette and Frazee playing their first games and not practicing with each other threw off the timing or whatever you want to call it. I see that they are playing around with the lines spreading out the size to 2 lines. Muench with Weal and Frazee as the top line. Ashton with Reddin and Hutt (Hutt and Ashton had some good chemistry in the late camp and early pre-season). The third line is apparently Gustafsson with Ouelette and Mitchell. And the fourth line could be a mish-mash of the remaining players. The lines are courtesy of Greg Harder on his Slap Shots blog).

More thoughts

I've probably said some of this before and I may have changed my opinion here and there but hey I think I'm allowed to (I hope it makes sense).

Having to redo/rework my season thoughts has been a lot harder to do than I thought. But here goes nothing:

It’s funny that when I posted that poll about how many wins the Pats would have this season I noticed that a few people either changed their votes or the maybe the Blogger poll is screwed up as few votes seemed to fluctuate.

I guess I should have voted on the poll but I chose to keep it for The Blueliner readers and it looks to be somewhat apparent.... no one knows what to think of the team this year. All but 10 people that voted picked the Pats to have less than 35 wins (I kinda screwed up the numbers when I posted the poll) which would see the Pats missing the playoffs yet again. 8 people chose the 35-40 option which might or might not see the Pats in the playoffs. Two people picked 40+ wins which would all but guarantee a playoff spot. I think everyone is picking the team to finish last in the conference even The Hockey News (I think it was Rob Vanstone that did the predictions)..... more on this later.

It looks like people have little to no faith in the team without the “big guns” from last year. Thinking about it.... where was this team the last 2 years? That’s right.... outside looking in. This is a new season and there is a new person in charge. No matter what people say or think this is Chad Lang’s team and I’m looking forward to him “righting the ship” this year and in years to come.

It’s gonna be different having Dan Plaster call the Pats games on a full time basis this year and I must say I think he did a pretty good job in game #1 in Brandon. I watched the webcast and couldn’t get the volume to work (I guess it has something to do with the browser... oops) so I go to see the play about 15-20 seconds after Dan did the call and I would have to say he was pretty much on for most of if not all of the game. I watched the archive of the game (it had sound) and Wheat King veteran announcer Bruce Luebke(sp?) had some name issues... it’s Dyson not Dillon Stevenson. 1 down 71 regular season games to go (and hopefully playoffs).

On to the team.....
Goaltending seems to be the big issue this year. Actually, when wasn’t the Pats goaltending an issue? This is no real knock to Ketlo, Guhle and Hewitt (only seen him in camp[s]) none of them have shown that they are elite goalies. With that said a few other teams have real question marks in net so the Pats aren’t the only team with issues. Ketlo seems to have earned the #1 job (so far). He’s prone to the weak goal but he’s also known to make some unbelievable saves. If he could somehow stop letting the weak ones in he could easily become a top goalie. I think Guhle has shown signs that he could be the #1 and just needs a chance to shine. If Ketlo falters Guhle is more than capable of stepping in. Hewitt is the unknown and I have really been impressed with him from camp through the exhibition season. Chad’s got some decisions to make. But with the season we had last year this position is probably the most discussed part of the team.

I really think that the teams defence is not as bad as everyone says. People say that they are missing size and toughness and I would have to agree with half of that assessment there is not much toughness on the blueline other than Sparrow and Bell. I honestly think that the Pats have a decent mix on the defensive side of things but they just aren’t a proven commodity. I think we have a decent top 3 with Bell, Carlson and Davidson. I think the way Blidstrand played in training camp I think he pretty much earned a spot in the top 4 so that leaves Borstmayer, Pavkovich, Peel, Sparrow and Spooner for the last 2 spots in the top 6. Borstmayer is only getting better but is still not super swift but can use his body and stick well and once he learns how excel with that he will be a top dman. Pavkovich has been injured but could be a true shut down dman. Peel is so slight and needs to learn how to use his skating and puck movement in the WHL and will become an everyday dman in the not too distant future. I don’t think Sparrow has improved from last year.... but looked pretty good (minus one bad mistake) on Friday in Brandon. I hope he brings the toughness aspect to the game and then maybe people won’t call for him to be gone. Spooner is all offence and would be perfect on the powerplay, his defence is not the greatest but looked as though he improved as training camp progressed. People are saying that Lang needs to go out and waste a 20-year old spot on a rugged tough blueliner..... I don’t know if they need to do that.... Maybe Sparrow can take the role? With the right coaching I think the defence isn’t as bad as people say it is.

The forwards are a totally different monster. Who is going to score goals? Is Weal really the “real deal”? I had to re-do this because of the Ashton factor/Frazee trade. So I had to cut out a few questions. I say that people are going to underestimate the Pats this year especially on the offensive side of things. I honestly think that Weal is going to prove a bunch of naysayers wrong and put up some big numbers. I don’t know if he can top the 100 point plateau but I think that 85+ is plausible. If he gets some help on his line those point totals are definitely a possibility. Gustafsson is an unknown scoring 14 goals last year. The way he’s been playing throughout camp I think he could easily improve on those totals and I’m thinking that he could pot 25 this year. Ashton will have something to prove to Hockey Canada and the Lightning so I’m expecting a big year from him, 30 goals should be easily attainable. I’m looking for Mitchell to have a career year and improve on his 15 goals from last year. Another couple of unknowns are Muench and Hutt.... the mini-mites are both extremely talented and I’m looking for some decent production from the two. Newly acquired overagers Reddin and Frazee have something to prove as 20 year olds and should put up some good numbers. Rookies Jung, Stephenson, Sagen and Ouellette (newly acquired) should all get chances to play and develop so I’m not even going to try to predict point totals for them (all depends on ice time). Stevenson is going to become a fan favourite even though he probably won’t get too much ice, the kid competes and isn’t afraid to get gritty. Rieder is a crash and banger that will yet again be a role player because there is just not enough ice, I think he would excel with more ice. Everyone’s favourite Favreau appears to have made the team.... I know that there are a lot of people that think he shouldn’t be here, blah, blah, blah. The scouts and coaches must see something in him to stick around as an 18 year old on the fourth line.

I hope players make any future choices extremely tough on Chad Lang. To be honest (I probably have used that too much already) I think the Pats are going to surprise a lot of people this season.

No matter what..... as long as the kids skate hard, play hard and give us something to cheer about I’ll be happy. No matter what happens I’m a Pats fan.

Good luck boys!

Another Trade

Media release:
Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats are proud to announce the acquisition of 17-year-old forward Trent Ouellette from the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for a conditional bantam draft pick.
Ouellette spent his 16-year-old year with the UFA Bisons of the Alberta Midget Hockey League. Ouellette was 4th in team scoring with 7 goals and 22 assists for 29 points in 32 games. He has had a strong training camp with the Tigers and was set to begin the season with the team.

C – Trent Ouellette
Born: Mar. 31/93
Drumheller, AB
6’0 163lbs. Shoots: Right
2009-10 (UFA Bisons AMHL)
GP-32 G-7 A-22 PTS-29 PIM-61

Regina Pats General Manager Chad Lang: “We like the fact that Trent is young and fills a void in the 1993 age group. He skates well with an offensive upside and gives us a little more depth down the middle.”

Ashton returned to the Pats

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots....

Ashton returned by Tampa
Christmas came early for the Regina Pats on Friday.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are sending LW Carter Ashton back to junior. So much for all the hysteria and assumptions about him playing in the NHL this season.

It's a bit of a surprise that he's coming back this soon, but not a shock that it's happening. It takes an exceptional case in addition to being in the right place at the right time for a player to crack the NHL at age 19. The stars didn't align for Ashton, who now gets a chance to show if he can dominate at the WHL level this season in addition to perhaps playing for Canada at the world juniors.

The Pats are still working on getting Ashton to Brandon for tonight's game. Not sure if it'll happen or not but Thomas Frazee is expected to make his debut.

With the additions of Ashton and Frazee, the Pats' lineup suddenly looks a lot bigger — and a whole lot better.

** UPDATE **

Ashton is not expected to rejoin the Pats in time for tonight's game. He's still in Edmonton with the Lightning, who lost 5-2 to the Oilers on Thursday. Ashton scored a goal in his second straight game, which is part of the reason it's a little surprising he's on his way back already.

This should certainly make for an interesting home-opener on Sunday against the Wheat Kings. Barring injuries, the Pats should have all hands on deck (Ashton, Frazee, Weal, etc.). We'll see what they can do.

Pats/Warrior Trade

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats are proud to announce the acquisition of 20 year old centre, Thomas Frazee, as well as a 4th round Bantam pick in 2011 and a 6th round pick in 2012 from the Moose Jaw Warriors in exchange for a 2nd round Bantam pick in 2012 and a 5th in 2013.

Frazee had a solid regular season with the Warriors in 2009-10 scoring 20 goals and accumulating 55 points in 70 games. He broke out in the Warriors playoff series with the Hitmen last season with 10 points in 7 games.

The 6'4" centre began his career with the Portland Winter Hawks as a 16 year old in 2006-07 and was a 1st round pick of the 'Hawks in 2005. Tomas was a free agent invitee to Dallas Stars camp this past month where he played in 3 games, picking up an assist.

More Pats Moves

Ricard Blidstrand is back with the club.

The Pats have returned Bryton Mills and Logan Sceviour to Junior A.

You can read Greg Harder's thoughts here.

Mitchell on his way back

I had read it a couple of places but I couldn't confirm it.

Greg Harder has the news here. It also looks as though Blidstrand will be back soon as well.
on September 21, 2010 by Kevin Shaw |

Good news...

At least one of our veterans will be back in time for the season opener.... Brandon Davidson has been returned to the Pats.

Ricard Blidstrand (Flyers) will be back soon. Jordan Weal (Kings) and Garrett Mitchell (Caps) may get a longer look and maybe get into pre-season action so their status questionable. Carter Ashton (Lightning) on the other hand may stick with the NHL club for a long look-see and given every chance to make the big club.
________
I'm totally expecting Blidstrand, Weal and Mitchell back in short notice but they may be gone for a couple of regular season games. Losing Ashton for any stretch would be a HUGE blow to the Pats. Time will tell.

I've updated the roster

As it seems as though Adam Beukeboom was re-assigned to Alberta Midget AAA.

________
I was really hoping the Pats would have given him a longer look. But I guess in the grand scheme of things having 4 goalies around is 2 too many. I think that he will challenge for a spot next year. I wish him luck in the AMHL.
________
With that being said the goaltending situation is now a 3 horse race.... Who is number one? That is anyone's guess. I hope that they give Hewitt a fair shot at making the club because he's proven that he can play at this level (I know it's exhibition but he's good). Ketlo and Guhle again? I don't think it makes sense.

Pats Re-assign 3

Jesse Hall
Brennan Tutt
Cass Mappin
Sent from my BlackBerry STORM® on the SaskTel Network.

Edit:
From RodPedersen.com

Regina, Saskatchewan – With the regular season set to begin next week, the Regina Pats have trimmed their roster this afternoon, re-assigning 3 players:

18 year old forward, Brennan Tutt has been re-assigned to Junior A

19 year old forward, Jesse Hall has been re-assigned to Junior A

20 year old forward, Cass Mappin has been re-assigned and placed on WHL Waivers.

The blue and white will complete the WHL preseason this Saturday in Saskatoon with a 7:05 puck drop. "The home of the home teams" 620 CKRM will have all of the action beginning with the Press Box pregame show at 6:35.

My thoughts....
I can't say as I was suprised by any of these cuts. Tutt was just trying to find a home and unfortunately he missed training camp and was that much behind in the grand scheme of things. Hall never really impressed me nor did he disappont me. It never looked like he was able to step it up to the proverbial "next level" to stand out. Unfortunately he never did. Mappin was a disappointment to me from most perspectives. At times last season he looked like he could be a top notch power forward and then just completely disappear. This year at training camp he was definitely a marked man (I don't know why to be honest) and now that he's gone maybe it will be the best for the team.

Stevenson putting up a fight to make roster

Note: I really think this Stevenson is brilliant. Raw talent that could turn out to be a huge asset to the Pats now and in the future. I think his attitude is great. I think we need more players with his type of attitude.

I like this quote from the article...

"I definitely want to show the coaches I'm not afraid to scrap," offered Stevenson, 17. "I want to show them I'll fight for a spot and I'll do anything to get that spot."

So it was Tutt

Unravelling the mystery of Tutt
_________
The Tutt name sounded familiar but I wasn't sure and thought that it was just a typo. I couldn't check for rosters on the WHL site as it is still not working... Oops. Welcome aboard Brennan Tutt.

A rant....

That article "Hunt wants urgency from team" has been bugging me since I read it the first time. I can understand that it's frustrating having training camp without your "go-to guys".... who coincidentally didn't help the Pats make it over the hump and get the playoffs the last two years. Now that they are gone it's time to move on and coach the players that are here and teach them to win!

It's been a frustrating two seasons for me watching the team pretty much flounder when it counted. Ask anyone that knows me.... I live Regina Pats Hockey. It's been hard to see the team go through this turmoil.

Seeing kids come and go from team is utter craziness. I understand they want to win but sometimes you need to keep your players and let them develop.... take some lumps along the way and make the odd run to the second round of the playoffs (I know I'm being sarcastic but I would like to see the team past the first round of the playoffs for once). Trading prospects like they mean nothing... to try and win 'now' makes absolutely no sense when you don't have the team to do it with. And not trading valuable assets to get kids and picks in return when you barely have an outside shot at the playoffs is totally ridiculous.

The quote that really gets me is this: With 31 players on the roster, the Pats have plenty of decisions to make before they open the regular season on Sept. 24 in Brandon. Asked if those decisions are becoming more clear, Hunt replied: "Oh yeah, they're clear. We've got holes to fill." Darn rights you have holes to fill! There was holes to fill last year and there is definitely questions this year. Many of the holes/gaps could have been filled from within but some kids never had a chance to prove themselves. I paid close attention to many games last year and some players were lucky to get 3 or 4 shifts a game. How are they going to be ready to fill the gaps this year? That is if they even came back to the team (Mulder, Orfino, Hricina). Was it not apparent that the team had holes to fill last year? Past the top 2 lines (and a couple of guys) who really had a chance to make a difference? If they weren’t good enough why were they still being dressed? Why were they still with the Pats? Man this almost makes me angry thinking about this.

If and when all of our key components come back from NHL camps I think that the Pats will be competitive but I think a few hard decisions will need to be made. I would hate to see the Pats miss the playoffs for the third straight season for the first time in the clubs HISTORY.

Anyway that’s my rant for tonight hopefully I don’t tick too many people off but I needed to say it and I hope everything makes sense it felt a little ramble-ish.

But whatever..... I do need to say this: No matter what happens GO PATS GO!

Hunt wants urgency from team

From Greg Harder
It's harvest time for the Regina Pats.

After dropping their third straight WHL pre-season game on Saturday -- a 7-3 setback versus the host Brandon Wheat Kings -- Pats head coach Curtis Hunt appropriately used a farming analogy to describe his team's plight.

"What's going on is we're really starting to separate the wheat from the chaff," offered Hunt. "(We're starting to see) who wants to be a player, who's willing to pay the price, who's willing to pay attention to detail and who's just out for a skate."

Player rumour....

I've heard that there will be a veteran WHL defenceman in the Pats' lineup fairly shortly.

I won't say who it is but he is 19. The player could be here as early as tonight.

K

Edit: From Greg Harder's Blog

Veteran WHL D-man Lane Werbowski, 19, attended the game after being cut by the Edmonton Oil Kings, leading to speculation that he might be joining the Pats. In reality, he was just passing through on his way home to Winnipeg.

>>To be honest, that's the player.... I heard differently regarding his status. But whatever that's why I called it a rumour.
on September 10, 2010 by Kevin Shaw |

My notes

Gustafsson scored the opener on a powerplay just 2:39 in. A rather weak goal from just inside the blueline off the post and in.

Rieder makes the game 2-0 with a nice effort 2-on-1 with Jung. Rieder makes the right decision and elects to shoot beating the netminder high glove side.

First period ends 2-0 Pats.

Brandon starts the second in some trouble getting two minors in the first couple of minutes one was a nasty cross check by Schneider on Rieder from behind and Fransoo with a delay of game firing the puck over the glass and into the crowd. The Pats take advantage of the 5-on-3 with Muench capitalizing on fluttering puck.

Fisticuffs: Stevenson vs. Miller. I'm not too sure what precipitated Stevenson to go after Miller (other than a good check on Mappin). It was a good scrap Miller got some good shots as did Stevenson. Miller gets the slight decision. Bell and Chiarelli were in each others' faces and the ref tried to keep the peace but Bell's mitts hit the ice and it was on another decent scrap but I would give the decision to Bell.

Brandon capitalizes on the 5-on-3 on a point shot from Fransoo that beats a screened Beukeboom.

Wheats change goalies 9:42 into 2nd 16 shots 13 saves 3 goals against. Boes out, Rimmer in.

Brandon gets within 1 with Toews scoring right off the faceoff. I’m not sure how it squeaked in but it got through Beukeboom.

Pats regain the 2 goal lead on a pretty passing play between Carlson, Spooner and Muench who was left all alone along his off-side and wired it home past Rimmer who had no chance.

Brandon brings the game back to within one on a pretty nice goal by Toews who lifts the puck past Beukeboom who went down early to cover the bottom of the net.

4-3 Pats after two.

Ketlo starts the third. Beukeboom ends the night with 21 saves on 24 shots.
Brandon tied the game on a fluky bounce off the Pats Borstmayer that eludes Ketlo (who was playing the original shot).

Game is 4-4 after regulation.

Terrible defensive effort in the OT by the Pats collective. Wiebe takes advantage of the bad display and puts the puck 5-hole past Ketlo.

Pats sign Beukeboom

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots:

The Regina Pats like what they see so far from Adam Beukeboom.

After a two-day tryout, the Pats have signed the 16-year-old goaltender to a WHL contract and plan to throw him straight into the fire as a starter in tonight's pre-season clash with the Brandon Wheat Kings. Beukeboom had been keeping his NCAA options open, but he's now committed to the major-junior route.

The Pats are eager to give Beukeboom a chance to show what he can do in exhibition action. It seems realistic that he'll end up back in midget AAA for another year — especially given his late arrival in Regina — but a strong showing tonight could earn him an extended audition. After that, who knows?

Regardless of how long he sticks around, Beukeboom's signing gives the Pats some much-needed depth between the pipes. With prospect Cory Nygaard unable to attend training camp due to off-season knee surgery, the Pats had very little depth beyond veterans Damien Ketlo and Dawson Guhle. Now, the surprising emergence of Matt Hewitt, combined with the addition of Beukeboom, gives them a great deal more security.

So far so good for Swede Blidstrand

From Greg Harder in today's LeaderPost:

"I'm very happy to be here," offered Blidstrand, whom the Regina Pats selected in the first round (46th overall) of the 2010 CHL import draft. "I just want to play well and show how good a skater I am and show what kind of player I am. I'm kind of an all-around player. I like to play offensive and defensive. I have to be a defender who makes good passes and skates a lot."

Pats goalie prospects story

A good story on the Pats goaltending prospects by Greg Harder. Follow the link to read the whole story.

Curtis Hunt on Matt Hewitt:
"He just stops pucks," offered head coach Curtis Hunt. "You would be hard-pressed to describe his style of play. He has a level of athleticism and he has a level of compete that allows him to have success. I like the way he plays, I like the way he challenges -- he's aggressive -- and I like the way he gets out and handles the puck. He continues to battle every day. That's what we want. We need guys to come in and battle every single day."

Please give honest answers.... I know the poll may be skewed by non-Pats fans but that's fine. I just want to see what people think. I have given the poll 2 weeks.... right up until the season begins. So please vote.

Overager thoughts....

I was just looking at the poll I had posted last week and I have come to a conclusion that people aren't too happy with our current 20-year old situation. With the acqusition of Colin Reddin I think that has gone a long way to aleviate the problem. 43% of voters wanted a centre to come in and Reddin is just that a centre. I don't think that's the move people were hoping Lang would do.... but it's a start.

The defence situstion received 31% of the vote and I also think that this is appropriate. Our defenders are in need of a leader.... a big physical stay at home dman..... Someone that can aleviate some of the pressure on our younger/returning defencemen.

The one that sorta caught me by surprise was the 19% that voted to get an overage goalie. I do think that our netminding can be improved but at what price? Ketlo is 19 and Guhle is 18.... with the new guy in town Hewitt also being 18. How would an overage fit? Would he really be that much better to burn an OA spot? With Adam Beukeboom in town and only being 16 a 20 year old doesn't make any sense.

This kinda bugs me....

Pats Must Play Team A Game: Coach
Link: http://www.reginapats.com/News/992/

"When you look at our guys I think they have a real clear understanding that we're going to be a team that does everything by committee," he said. "Understanding that coming in makes for a tighter group and it makes for a group that's more apt to make our environment one of better accountability, one of better communication, one of better team in general."

_________
Okay I normally don't comment excessively about too many things but man this article hit a nerve. While I agree with some of the things in the story but others really bug me.

Well the first thing I don't like is the title of the story.... Pats must play a team game.... Isn't hockey a team game? Weren't the 2009-10 Pats a team? From reading the article I wouldn't believe it. Just ask Kyle Mulder, Dominick Favreau, Craig Orfino, Travis Sparrow and Tyler Borstmayer (amongst others) who on occasions played as few as 1 or 2 shifts a game. How is that a team game? If you don't think a player is capable of pulling their weight why even dress them? It was agonizing sitting and watching players sit on the bench for periods at a time.

I totally understand how players are going to have to pick up the "slack" from the loss of Eberle et al. But most players will get more ice and more opportunities to shine as long as the coach doesn't shorten the bench to 2.5 lines and 4 defence every game. I guess time will tell.

That's all I'm going to say on that for tonight.

Ketlo can't save Pats
By Greg Harder Sat, Sep 4 2010 COMMENTS(0) Slap Shots
MOOSE JAW — The last line of defence was just about the only one for the Regina Pats on Saturday.
Veteran netminder Damien Ketlo stood on his head behind a rookie-ladden crew that was thrown to the wolves at the Civic Centre. The result was a 3-0 pre-season loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors, who avenged Friday’s 5-2 setback in Regina.
The Warriors went with an older lineup on Saturday, dressing nine WHL rookies (none of whom were 15-year-olds) compared to 11 for the Pats, who had three 15-year-olds.
It showed.
Regina was outshot 12-5 in a scoreless opening frame but Ketlo couldn’t hold off the Warriors forever. The home team broke the ice early in the second period when Spencer Edwards converted a cross-crease feed 2:54 into the frame, then rookie Sam Fioretti wired a shot under the cross-bar just 35 seconds later for a 2-0 lead.
It could have been a lot worse if not for Ketlo, who faced 28 shots through two periods while counterpart Brandon Glover didn’t break a sweat, facing only nine.
The trend continued in the third as Ketlo turned away wave after wave while the Pats failed to mount any kind of an offensive threat outside of star centre Jordan Weal.

This is funny

Great catch on an article by Greg Harder from a Philadelphia magazine on Nyjer Morgan's recent shenanigans in MLB.

Check out Greg's Blog post here: http://communities.canada.com/reginaleaderpost/blogs/slapshots/default.aspx

I happened to find the article and I think I'm going to post it.... Ya I'm going to post it.

Morgan's fighting spirit a product of his hockey days
by Bob Herpen
Phanatic Hockey Editor

The twist on the old joke about uncharacteristic violence erupting at a sporting event took on new meaning Wednesday night. For the 18,326 who attended the Nationals-Marlins tilt in South Florida, they went to a baseball game and a hockey fight broke out.

Leading the charge in Florida's 16-10 shellacking of DC's diamond dogs was volatile Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan, who charged the mound after Fish hurler Chris Volstad threw behind him in the sixth inning.

The slender San Francisco native fearlessly charged the mound, landing a roundhouse punch to the side of Volstad's face before being consumed by the tidal wave of flesh and emotion that travels to the epicenter of any bench-clearing melee.

Listening to Nationals broadcasts and national talking heads since Morgan made it to the big leagues, several adjectives have come to the forefront: fearless, aggressive, emotional, reckless, impulsive...and that's before he's complimented for his skill and speed.

They all love the way Morgan charges after deep fly balls to his post in center, sensing that he doesn't possess an ounce of fear for collisions with those big roadblocks in front of the outfield stands. They don't love his emotional outbursts on and off the field, and often question whether he has the maturity to exist in the most reserved of the four major sports.

For Morgan, though, competition is to be experienced with the very same qualities others believe will be his downfall. He learned them as a hockey player.

A young Morgan was taken with the sport after watching the 1988 Winter Games in Calgary, and pestered his parents to play the game until he was able to snag a tryout with the British Columbia Hockey League's Vernon Vipers as a 16-year-old.

He didn't make the team, but bounced around several other clubs in the low Canadian minors until hooking on with the Regina Pats of the famed Western Canadian Hockey League in 1999.

Even now, the WCHL carries with it a reputation of making the tough players tougher and weeding out the rest. Morgan was no exception. He not only had to fight to keep his spot on the team, but also had to fend off cuture shock and prejudice; after all, he was trying to make his way in a sport that is predominantly Caucasian, in a league that is primarily Canadian, and in Regina, Saskatchewan -- a bastion of lily-whiteness in the most lily-white of Canadian regions: the Prairies.

The Regina Pats also carry with them a tradition of sending cementheads to the pros, guys who at one time might have been able to make a mark playing the game, but who were molded at this step into enforcers. Garth Butcher, Lyndon Byers, Stu Grimson are retired punchers with bona-fide NHL careers whose names stick out, but Morgan's equal might have been the diminutive Nevin Markwart.

A 1983 draft pick of the Bruins, Markwart was 5-foot-10, 180 pounds but never shied away from conflict. He racked up more than 20 fights in his career and topped out at 207 penalty minutes in 65 games in 1985-86, then followed up with 225 in 64 games the next season.

Morgan, like Markwart, had a truncated hockey career.

After scoring twice in his debut, the nascent baseball player skated in just six more games before being released and leaving the sport for good. Rumors from several sources that have popped up in the wake of Morgan's recent antics have suggested everything from his "combative attitude" to a mysterious marijuana bust by Pats coaches to a pregnant girlfriend, caused his exit from the game.

Nonetheless, the time spent prowling the ice has clearly made an impact on Morgan's professional demeanor. Sometimes the cliches are true. Hockey is a game played at full speed, on the emotional edge, requiring constant vigilance and reaction, which is governed by an unwritten code and contested in what is a glorified corral.

That spirit is clearly in Morgan's blood and drives his competitiveness. The game does leave that much of an imprint.

That's why it should come as any surprise to any baseball fan who knows the game of hockey that the Morgan-Volstad meeting which sparked the brawl played out the way it did. Though clearly at a size disadvantage, Morgan faced bigger and more motivated kids in Moose Jaw and Red Deer than Volstad, so, of course he wasn't going to back down.

He came in with elbows up and right hand cocked in battle position, like smaller players are taught when facing a fight. So what if he didn't land it the way he wanted? He got the only shot in. He took care of the situation the way he was trained.

Did it matter that Morgan has left quite a paper trail of trouble since his big-league debut, and that he's currently appealing a seven-game ban from Major League Baseball for allegedly beaning a Phillies fan during a game two Saturdays ago in Philadelphia?

Did it ever matter to Tie Domi, or Bob Probert, or P.J. Stock, or any other scrappy kid trying to make it past players who are bigger and stronger and more talented? What always mattered was that business needed to be taken care of -- and quickly -- then was taken care of in the most direct manner possible.

But all of that doesn't fly in the genteel, reserved and quietly prejudiced ways of the former American pastime. I read this morning that because of the brawl, Morgan somehow "makes Milton Bradley look normal" or some such nonsense.

The next time you're tempted to place Morgan in that category of "angry/crazy African-American guy" remember that his personality was forged in an atmosphere completely different from where he exists now.

His heart and mind may belong to baseball, but hockey is coursing through his blood.

2010 Forwards

The forwards are a whole new gamut this year with no Eberle, Leffler or Strueby in the mix it opens up the competition that much further. I will only comment on the kids I recognized and really paid attention to. I didn’t find out who a few were until it was too late and I couldn’t focus on their play. I will mention the top few forwards that I think will make up the top 6 or at least be part of it.

Jordan Weal – his time is now. He’s got all the tools to be an amazing talent. Even though he’s so undersized he’s going to put up a bunch of points no matter who his line mates are. 102 points as a 17 year old is amazing.

Carter Ashton – I’m not sure how he’s going to fit into the top 6 but he’s going to be there and with a vengeance. He could easily top 40 goals this year if his mindset is right and gives it hard every shift he could be one of the top power forwards in the conference.

Garrett Mitchell – Captain Regina. I’m not exactly sure what his role is going to be yet again. He’s a hard checking player that has a nose for the net. I think he could (should) top his career high in goals and fit into a role on the wing on the 2nd line. I did notice that they had him playing some centre during camp.... Stay tuned I guess.

Hampus Gustafsson – so much skill. He just needs to channel it. He has an amazing shot and is shifty with the puck and is easily 1st or 2nd line LW.

I think now is where it gets a bit blurry and players that think they may have made the team are going to be disappointed. There are some talented kids in camp that didn’t don a Pats jersey last year that could easily unseat many of the vets. I will go in alphabetical order as I really have no idea as to which way they will be leaning with a lot of the guys.

Devin Balness has looked good. Hasn’t done anything spectacular but looks like a good team player that can fill any role asked of him. He has decent speed.

Dominick Favreau is the same. I really don’t think he has improved but with that being said he hasn’t regressed any. I really think that his time with the Pats is coming to an end.

Jesse Hall is a very similar player to Favreau and a year older. He’s looked okay but hasn’t impressed me with anything outstanding. Would probably be a role player if he were to make it.

Killian Hutt is a special player. He’s gifted offensively and has improved his speed. The only knock is that he’s tiny. I think he should be a top 6 forward.

Mikael Jung is speed. I just hope the puck can catch up to him. He’s got some real ability but just needs to finish more often.

Cass Mappin is in tough. I’m not sure if there is animosity between the players and Mappin but man they have been after him all camp. To fire him up? Or do they genuinely not like him?

Bryton Mills has been a surprise to me. He’s got some size and decent speed. He would be a real nice addition as a checker and grinder.

Dane Muench is another tiny skilled forward that has fit in good alongside Weal and Gustafsson. But from what I’ve read he’s either hit or miss but in this camp he’s looked pretty good.

Tyler Parker is still a crash and banger that may be in tough to crack the line-up especially with the emergence of Mills and Dyson Stevenson. I don’t know if he’s done enough.

Andrew Rieder has been alright and I think he’s reserved his spot on the checking line.

Jack Rodewald had a really good camp and played well with Stephenson. I don’t know if he’ll make the team but he’s improved a lot.

Michael Sagen has had a good camp but where would he fit on this club? Stephenson and he would be a deadly combo but will it happen?

Chandler Stephenson is as advertised. He’s another small skilled forward that will put up some good numbers. I don’t know what role he will have with the club but I hope they use him wisely.

Dyson Stevenson should make this team. If he does he will be a fan favourite. He’s got some good wheels and hits and fights. He even has some touch around the net.

I have no comment on Tanner Dusyk, Branden Halbgewachs, TJ Reeve and Logan Sceviour. This doesn’t mean that they had a bad camp or anything but not having roster numbers really put a kibosh on some of my thoughts.

With our fifteen year olds I’m extremely impressed! Morgan Klimchuk is money. He is so good it’s almost unbelievable. Ty McLean is a small and plucky forward that can skate with the big boys and will turn some heads once he makes the big club. Dryden Hunt is another mini forward in the Pats system. He too has tons of skill and is pretty quick; I hope he signs on with the Pats.

I would have to say that the not too distant future is looking very good for the Pats.

2010 Defenders

This group was a little tougher to gauge. Past Carlson, Davidson, Bell and Blidstrand I think it’s a competition for the remaining 3 or 4 spots (depending how many d they keep around).  Spooner, Borstmayer, Pavkovich, Peel, Whelan, Sparrow all have a chance to make the club in some capacity. I don’t think it’s as clean cut as it seems. I guess it depends what GM Lang is expecting or wanting.

Brandon Davidson comes back as the teams #1 defenceman.  He has looked good in camp and has improved immensely. Look for him to be our top shut down guy and probably lead the defence in points.

Cody Carlson when paired Davidson will make the teams top defence pair and get top minutes on the powerplay and put up some nice numbers.

Myles Bell has come in this season bigger, meaner and I would take a guess that he is tougher. I don’t expect him to put up huge numbers.... yet (next year)..... but could surprise.  I don’t see him playing the powerplay much but I think he will be the top penalty kill d-man.

Ricard Blidstrand will most likely play the left side of the second pair alongside Bell. He has a HUGE shot and will be a perfect fit for the powerplay. Once he gets more acclimatized to the WHL he will be a top d-man on the club.

After the top 4 (in my eyes) the competition is wide open...
Mitch Spooner I would think is on the next pairing (#5) as he showed a big offensive upside but his defensive game is suspect. I think he would anchor the 2nd powerplay unit.

Tyler Borstmayer is so tall and lanky. I don’t think he has improved much but he’s 17 and still growing. He’s only going to get better. I really like his upside. I think he’s good for a spot in the top six.

Travis Sparrow is in tough I would say. Due to his age and his skating I just think he might be on the outside looking in.

Tyler Pavkovich in my opinion has made this team. He is a shut down defenceman that is 2 years the junior of Sparrow.

Landon Peel from what I saw had a disappointing camp but had a good go of things during the rookie blue/white game. I was hoping that he would have come in and lit it up.

Sean Whelan looked pretty good for what I saw of him. He never made many mistakes and is pretty mobile.

Kyle Burroughs and Colby Williams are impressive 15 year olds! Watch out next year.

1st pair: Davidson-Carlson
2nd pair: Blidstrand-Bell

2010 Goalies

From my training camp perspective..... Here are my thoughts on the early goings.

Goalie Situation: From what I have seen I would have to say that the goaltenders are going to be status quo. I still am not convinced that either one is a true number 1’s but they are both capable.

Damien Ketlo hasn’t done anything to cost him his job as #1. He hasn’t looked good and he hasn’t looked bad. He’s battled and like I said I don’t think he has done anything to cost him his title as #1.

Dawson Guhle got better each scrimmage. He’s amazing low in the net but I’m a bit scared of his blocker side but he’s definitely improving. I do think that if Ketlo falters at all it’s Guhle’s job to take.

Matt Hewitt looked good at times and I am impressed with his poise in the net. I think he did a decent job and if the situation was a bit different he might have a chance.

Tanner Burghardt has A LOT of promise and I think he will be a good one once he gets a chance. Has been sent to SMAAAHL for the year to play for the Saskatoon Blazers.

I’ve been informed that the Pats have listed another prospect names Adam Beukeboom. I don’t know much about him and he wasn’t at camp.

Depth Chart:
Ketlo (91)
Guhle (92)
Hewitt (92)
Burghardt (95) - playing AAA midget

2010-11 Season Ticket Booklet

I decided to take a few hours away from hockey today but that didn't happen for very long. Here is a scan of the front of Season Ticket Packages I think it's pretty jazzy... yes I said jazzy!

I will be working on some stuff over the next few hours to get on here. I may even post some "Forecasts" for the season.

Pats Acquire 20 Year Old

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pat are proud to announce the acquisition of 20 year old Centre, Colin Reddin from the Prince Albert Raiders in exchange for a conditional 2012 6th round WHL Bantam Draft Pick.

Reddin split time between the Portland Winterhawks and the Prince Albert Raiders in 2009-10 playing in 68 games, scoring 10 times and picking up 13 assists. The native of Corona Del Mar, California is entering his 4th season with in the Western Hockey League after beginning his junior career with the U.S. National Under 18 Team.

Regina Pats General Manager Chad Lang, “We’re excited to add Colin to our line-up. He is a skilled centerman that skates very well. We feel his experience and offense ability will help provide the depth we are seeking down the middle.”

Reddin joins forward Cass Mappin as the only two 20 year olds currently on the Pats roster, one less than the league maximum of 3.

Training Camp 2010 will culminate tonight with the annual Prairie Mobile Communications “Blue and White” at the Co-Operators Centre. It’s a 7pm puck drop and is $5 at the door to get in.

Day 5 is here!

I figured that since I have been to everything on the schedule I would come to the morning skates of both Blue and White. I was under the impression that everything started at 9:45 but I guess they are running late.... which is fine by me as I have nowhere to be but here.

I will post the line combinations and take some pictures and go from there.

Edit: It's now 10:15 and although they are setup for a morning skate there has yet to be any skating done. There are a few people around the rink but not many.

Update: It's now 11:00 and there has yet to be any type of morning skating. I don't know how much longer I'm going to stick this out.

No morning skate today.
