The Winnipeg native is in his second year with the Americans and has a 1-1 record this season as a back-up with a 2.73 GAA and a shutout.

He was a teammate of Kyle Mulder with the Winnipeg Thrashers club that went to the Telus Cup finals in 2008.

Can Pats succeed in second half?

Greg Harder notes some interesting things in his story which can be found here.

--------
I'm going to reserve judgement for now.... I really don't know what to say anymore. People ask me "what's wrong with th Pats?" and I honestly don't have an answer. I've tried to pinpoint the "problem" but I haven't had any success. I thought I had it figured out a few times only to be swayed in my judgement.

I hope they can turn things around but if not I'm still a Pats fan no matter who owns the team, runs the team, coaches the team and who plays for the team. They have been around for a long time and have gone through a lot of ups and downs. My name is Kevin and I am a Pats fan!

Pats @ Hitmen

I really had my doubts about this one all due to the previous few games. I hate to say it but I thought the boys were going to get shellacked (just because Calgary is darn good). I'm glad they came out and played and made a game of it.

I chose not to watch the game on the internet tonight just so I could listen to Rod Pedersen's play-by-play. I'm not really sure why he gets so much flack from fans around the WHL (some message board people are pretty much a joke, but that's another story for another day). I honestly have listened to most of the announcers and I would have to say Rod is easily one of the top guys out there. Each and every announcer puts his own spin on the events to make the game interesting and I think Rod is one of the best ones at it. Some guys are right to the facts.... point by point about what's happening and that gets booooooring..... after about 3 minutes. Even when the Pats are losing or havin an off night, he's interesting. The best times are when the fan comes out in him and sometimes I can't believe he says some things on the radio that he does but it's just enjoyable. Hey Rod.... Keep up the good work.

When I heard that Ketlo was out I got worried about the netminding situation. But Damien has been shaky at best over the last few games and I had a change of heart.... I honestly felt sorry for Guhle having to go into Calgary against one of the best teams in the East. I got thinking that it's now his chance to take the "ball and run" and I was actually hoping he would have a good showing. I admit that I have been somewhat critical of the Pats goaltending this year (maybe bitter over seeing my buddy get demoted then traded, another story for another day) and I still am not 100% comfortable with the teams situation. BUT with efforts like the one Guhle put forth tonight.... my criticism is slowly going away. I really hope he can keep it up for the rest of the season. GOOD JOB Dawson!

As I did listen to the game I never really paid much attention to individual efforts (other than Guhle in net) so I won't be commenting on any players' performance.

Officiating = BUNK! Enough said!

I guess I should....

say something about the past few Pats games but after watching and listenening to the games I don't think it's necessary to criticize the management, coaches or players. Hey people.... remember these are 16-20 year old kids and they are far from perfect. I honestly think once they get themselves together (I hope it's sooner than later.... or it could be too late) they will be fine.

I have decided to be more positive.... or less critical. It's just frustrating seeing them lose.

Anyway,

GO PATS GO!

I have added a poll

I don't know if it's just me or what it is but I'm not really digging the blue background anymore.

I dunno if it's the white on blue that bugs me or what it is. I do know one thing though, the red links on the blue background just don't look good and I think I will be changing them no matter how the poll goes.

Or maybe I'm just bored and have the urge to change things again.

Please vote. If you want to comment please feel free but at least vote.

Thanks,

KS

UPDATE: As you can see I switched up the colours/fonts for The Blueliner and I do find it easier to read and I think it looks better. I will probably tweak it a bit more..... please give me some ideas about some content that I could add/remove and I will take into consideration all comments or emails about how to improve my blog.

Thanks,

Another deal!

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots

Parker pulls trigger again
By Greg Harder Thu, Dec 10 2009

The Regina Pats are about to announce yet another major trade — this one with the Vancouver Giants.

The Pats have acquired D Mitch Spooner, 17, LW Cass Mappin, 19, and the rights to RW Mikael Jung, 17, for G Derek Tendler, 17, a fifth-round bantam pick in 2011 and their first-round pick in the 2010 CHL import draft.

We'll have more when the deal becomes official.

** UPDATE **

Done deal!

We told you following Wednesday’s blockbuster with Lethbridge that the Pats were talking to Vancouver about acquiring a defenceman. Those discussions ended up bearing fruit — albeit in a deal that’s much bigger than originally expected.
Mappin, 19, gives the Pats another top six forward who (like Craig Orfino) fills a need as a player who’s expected to return next season as a 20-year-old. Vancouver had acquired him on Sept. 29 from the Red Deer Rebels for import sniper Andrej Kudrna. The Giants acquired Mappin to play centre, but it apparently didn’t turn out to be a good fit. The Pats will use him in his natural position, left wing, allowing Brett Leffler to move back to his natural position on the right side.
Mappin has four goals and 14 points in 26 games between Red Deer and Vancouver this season. In 2008-09, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder had 17 goals and 39 points in just 56 games.
Spooner, a 6-foot-0, 190-pounder, was a first-round pick (19th overall) in the 2007 bantam draft. He’ll take the place of Alex Pym, who left the team on Monday. Even before Pym’s departure, the Pats had been hoping to add a 17-year-old D-man to balance out their back end, which was dominated by 18-year-olds. Spooner is in his first season with Vancouver, recording one goal, two assists and eight penalty minutes in 20 games.
Jung is playing for the BCHL’s Cowichan Valley Capitals, the same team that Regina native Drew George refused to join after they acquired him in a trade. Jung, a sixth-round pick in the 2007 bantam draft, is a major-league speedster who has six goals and nine points in 27 games with Cowichan. It hasn’t been determined if he’ll join the Pats immediately.
This deal accomplishes a number of needs for the Pats. Mappin gives them a potential impact forward who should return next season as a 20-year-old. Spooner replaces Pym while adding depth on the back end. He and Jung also give the Pats some skill, speed and depth in an age group which they’re thin, especially on defence.
To make it happen, they had to give up a talented goalie prospect in Tendler, who was deemed expendable after he was beaten out for the backup job by Dawson Guhle. Tendler is playing for the SJHL’s Estevan Bruins, with whom he posted a 5-6-1 record and a 3.14 GAA.
The import pick isn’t a huge loss since it should end up being a low first-round selection anyway (assuming the Pats are able to climb the standings). That pick and the fifth-rounder can be replaced down the road if necessary.
Clearly, the Pats are “going for it.” Whether you agree with that approach or not, Parker certainly deserves credit for beating his fellow GMs to the punch — and making his team significantly better (on paper) in the process.

We'll see how it pans out.

Trade Winds Blow Between Hurricanes and Pats
2009-12-09

Regina, Saskatchewan – Regina Pats General Manager is proud to announce the acquisition of forwards Carter Ashton, Craig Orfino and a 3rd round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft from the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In exchange, the Pats send 17 year old forward Graham Hood, 15 year old prospect Taylor Balog, a 2nd round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft, as well as their 1st round pick in 2011.

18 year old, Carter Ashton is native of Saskatoon and was a 1st round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. This season he has 13 goals and 13 assists in 28 games with the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

19 year old Craig Orfino is a native of Edmonton and is in his 3rd WHL season. In 30 games this season with the Hurricanes, he has 6 goals, 6 assists and tallied 27 minutes in penalties.

“We are very excited to add two players of this quality to our line-up. We have paid a hefty price but we are confident that this addition will make our team even more competitive as we move into the second half of the year.” Regina Pats General Manager, Brent Parker continues “We wish Graham and Taylor the best of luck. They are tremendous young men and will have a bright future in Lethbridge.”

Ashton and Orfino will be in the Pats line-up on Friday night in Medicine Hat, it’s an 8:05 pre-game show on 620 CKRM, with an 8:30 puck drop at the Medicine Hat Arena.

Pats acquire Carter Ashton and Craig Orfino from Lethbridge

Hurricanes Press Release

This was posted on the Lethbridge Hurricanes website:

Another Hurricanes Blockbuster
Wed, December 9th, 2009
Canes acquire Graham Hood and prospect Taylor Balog along with draft picks in 2010 and 2011 in exchange for Carter Ashton and Craig Orfino
Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes have completed another trade today, this time acquiring a 92-born forward, a talented prospect and a pair of future draft picks. Hurricanes General Manager/Head Coach, Rich Preston, announced this afternoon that the Canes have acquired 92-born forward Graham Hood, highly touted 94-born prospect Taylor Balog along with a 2nd round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft as well as a 1st round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft from the Regina Pats in exchange for 2009 NHL 1st round draft pick Carter Ashton and veteran forward Craig Orfino.

Hood, a Saskatchewan native is in his second year in the WHL and has totaled eight points (5G, 3A) in 21 games thus far this season. In 08-09, his rookie season, he totaled 13 points (6G, 7A) in 60 games and 35 PIMs. A big body at 6’2”, 203 pounds, Hood has already nearly exceeded his point totals from all of last season and has the potential to become a WHL Top 6 forward.

Balog was considered to be a steal when selected by the Pats in the second round (28th overall) in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft. Originally projected to be a Top ten WHL Bantam pick and was ranked sixth overall by International Scouting Services. In 2008-09, the 6’1” 185 pounder played in Weyburn, alongside WHL first-overall Bantam Draft Pick Derrick Pouliot with a team that won the Saskatchewan Bantam Championship.

“Graham Hood is a big strong kid who has already matched his numbers from a year ago and definitely has the upside to be a top 6 forward and step in to play right now.” said Hurricanes Assistant to the GM/Hockey Operations Rich Sutter “Balog is a very good 94 who we all liked and after seeing him play last week he is a key piece of this trade. He is a good sized kid and has a real opportunity to come in and play an important role next season as a 16 year old. All this and we also continue to add to our future with these draft picks.”

Both Ashton and Orfino are players who began their WHL careers in Lethbridge. Ashton, a Saskatoon native was drafted by the Hurricanes in the first round (6th overall) of the 2006 WHL Bantam Draft. He has had much success in the Hockey Canada Program of excellence winning a bronze medal as a member of Team Western at the 2008 U17 World Hockey Challenge and scoring the game winning goal in the gold medal game for the Team Canada U18s at the 2008 Ivan Hlinka Memorial tournament Last season, he led all Hurricanes players with 30 goals and 10 power play goals in his second season in the league. This summer he was drafted in the first round (29th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning and attended his first NHL Training Camp with the Lightning before signing an NHL Entry Level contract with the Lightning in the fall.

Orfino is a fan favorite who in 2008-09 was Awarded the Hurricanes Most Popular Player Award as voted by the players as well as the Joan Kobal Memorial Award for Perseverance, Dedication and Sportsmanship. He was originally drafted by Lethbridge in the 10th round (185th overall) of the 2005 WHL Bantam draft. In 2007-08 he had a solid rookie season in and has since developed into a leader for the Hurricanes both on and off the ice. A career highlight came in the 2008 WHL playoffs as he notched game and series winner in Lethbridge’s game six of the first round of the 2008 WHL playoffs against the Brandon Wheat Kings; it was the first time the Canes advanced past the first round of the WHL playoffs in over a decade. In 2007-08 he was named Co-winner of the Hurricanes Scholastic Player of the Year Award and the Co-winner of the Hurricanes Most Improved Player of the Year Award.

Hmmm......

As most people now know Alex Pym has left the Pats which is just too bad. I was really looking forward to this season as I figured Alex would have a break out season. He had an impressive pre-season but once the teams vets returned from pro tryouts he just seemed to get pushed down the depth chart and I have no reason or explanation as to why. Even though he did have his moments good and bad..... he is a solid d-man that needed to play and I think the more he played the better he played. I do wish Alex all the best in his future endeavours, wherever they may lead him. Good luck.

-----------
Now I don't know the reasons he left nor do I really want to, but does it ever leave the Pats in the lurch for the next little while. Over Christmas it will be tough....

Depth chart:
Delahey
Carlson
Sparrow
?
?
?

Away:
Teubert (WJHC)
Borstmayer (U-17)
Bell (U-17)
Davidson (injured)

I've been thinking about possible replacements and have come up with a few possibilities (barring a trade or two):

Dominic Perrault - North Battleford North Stars (SJHL) - I'm not sure if he's still listed but I guess he could be one of the stop gaps.

Justin Slobozian - OCN Blizzard (MJHL) - I really hope he's listed and wants another chance in the WHL and i think he would be a good fit as a call-up during this stretch.

A few other possible prospect call-ups could be: Rhett Holland, Shamus Graham, Ryan Leonzio, Husdon Friesen, Tyler Mueller, Tyler Pavkovich, Landon Peel, Jesse Roden and Sean Whelan. I have no idea what the Pats list consists of as of right now and the names I mentioned were on the list earlier in the season and some are still prospects.
-------------
Time will tell I guess.

Pats vs. Raiders

Pre-warmup thoughts....

... I hope Davidson's injury isn't bad because the D needs him out there.

... I know it wasn't totally the netminders fault last night but whoever starts needs to have a HUGE game.

... I hope the D coverage is waaaaaay better tonight, Brandon exploited it in a bad way last night.

... I hope that the officiating is above sub-par tonight... Last night was close to a joke.

... I wish the home team would wear white (I know it will switch back after the new year... But it needs to be a year long thing in my opinion).

... I hope Kyle Mulder gets more ice time... He has been playing extremely well.

That's it for now.
