EBERLE WANTS TO STAY
Pats Star Hopes To Nix Deal To Memorial Cup Hosts

This isn't a newspaper but if it was, that would be the headline blaring across the front page of today's Sports section.

Yes, this was the story I was alluding to on Tuesday's postgame radio show after the Pats' 5-3 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings. I said I had some news about Eberle I was sitting on and here it is.

In an article for the upcoming winter edition of Fine Lifestyles Regina Magazine, I profiled Eberle and the Regina Pats. With the club languishing around the .500 mark one-third into the season, there's become speculation Eberle and teammate Colten Teubert could be sent to the 2010 Memorial Cup host Brandon Wheat Kings, or the conference-leading Saskatoon Blades.

"I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about it (the trade rumours)," said the Pats' leading scorer. "Obviously there is talk out there but as far as my thoughts go, I want to help Regina be a Memorial Cup contender."

This is a story in my eyes because we've had local players on the Pats before who wanted a trade to a contender.

Not Jordan Eberle.

"I've grown up through this system and I owe a lot to it so in my mind I would love to help Regina do well and finish off my career here on a winning note."

So there ya go. The Scoop Du Jour.

I know there are some factions within the Regina Pats organization who desperately want Eberle and teammate Colten Teubert to stay with the club to finish their careers. However G.M. Brent Parker must at least be thinking about making a move.

At least now, whichever teams are interested will have to come up with a king's ransom.

Older news I know...

Teubert Named WHL Captain

eriesCalgary, AB. – The Western Hockey League in association with the Canadian Hockey League and SUBWAY® today announced the players that will serve as Captains and Assistant Captains for Team WHL in the 2009 SUBWAY® Super Series games to be played in Victoria, BC on Wednesday November 25 and in Kelowna on Thursday November 26, 2009.

Regina Pats defenceman Colten Teubert has been named Team WHL captain for game five of the SUBWAY® Super Series in Victoria, BC.

The 19-year-old from White Rock, BC, is playing his fourth year with the Regina Pats and was a member of Team Canada last season when they captured Gold at the 2009 World Junior Championships.

Teubert, who was selected in the 1st round – 13th overall by the Los Angeles Kings at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, is representing Team WHL for the second straight season. Jared Cowen (Spokane Chiefs), Jordan Eberle (Regina Pats) and Brayden Schenn (Brandon Wheat Kings) have been named as the assistant captains for Team WHL for the game in Victoria, BC. All three participated in last season's Super Series with Team WHL.

Kelowna Rockets forward Brandon McMillan has been named Team WHL captain for game six of the SUBWAY® Super Series in Kelowna, BC. The 19-year-old from Delta, BC is playing his fourth season with the defending WHL Champion Kelowna Rockets.

Craig Cunningham (Vancouver Giants), Wacey Hamilton (Medicine Hat Tigers) and Travis Hamonic (Moose Jaw Warriors) have been named as assistant captains for Team WHL for the game in Kelowna, BC.

-------------------------
It makes me wonder as to why the Pats haven't named a captain yet. Teubert has been recognized as captain for team WHL yet he isn't the captain of the Pats. It makes me wonder if something is up with Teubert/Eberle.

Anyway, congrats to Teubert! Make the Pats' fan's proud!

I'm back....

I've been suffering from a sinus infection so I haven't been on my computer much the last couple days. I am looking forward to watching the game on webtv as it looks like Kootenay has a decently nice webcast (except for the bad audio). I will have some thoughts about some of the things I have read today. I'm glad to be fairly healthy.

Update: Arsene is in the Oilers' Line-up

Wearing #8

From NHL.com: played 6:24 in his first game as teams' 7th d-man.

Way to go Dean-O!!

Bad news for Hood

I just read on Greg Harder's blog that Hood may have broke his collar bone and is out indefinitely.

You can check it out here.

Congrats to Dean Arsene

In making it to the show. I see he didn't play on Sunday as was expected so hopefully he gets into the line-up tonight to make it official.

You can find the link here.

It's about time I updated The Blueliner

I've been lazy the last few days just sitting and watching sports. I actually enjoyed most of the Pats' games this weekend (Saturday was the exception). I had the opportunity to watch the road games on the internet and have to say that the Wheat Kings webcast is probably one of the better ones in the WHL.... Other than a couple of choppy segments it was good.

I honestly don't know what to say about the pats this year.... one night they are fun to watch the next night it's just eyeglazing hockey (I know it has to do with the opponent as well); it puzzles me. Thinking about it.... the Pats have been like this for years. Me as a fan; I don't know what goes on behind closed doors or if the players are hurt or if they are sick but some nights players just look downright sluggish. But that's a discussion for another day.

I was going to put a huge write-up about this weekend games but it's already Monday and most people have read what they wanted to read or heard what they wanted to hear so I won't add to that. I am going to post the summaries below and start again fresh with Tuesday's game against the Oil Kings.

Lest We Forget

IN FLANDERS FIELD

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Pats/Blades thoughts.....

First thing that I have to say is the Saskatoon Blades are a well coached machine that are going places. I think that they are a piece or 2 from being a real legit top team for the season. They are a good team. Bravo to Lorne for making the division a very exciting one.

On to the game... Pats make 2 noticeable mistakes and bam the puck is in the net. I give zero blame for any of the goals against in this one. The Niemi pass on the shorty was a thing of beauty.

The Blades came out guns blazing and I think it caught the Pats somewhat offguard. The Pats took an early questionable major penalty in the first minute and the Blades seemed somewhat frustrated that they only potted one goal, and even though the Blades were up 3-1 I do think that PK set the Pats in the right direction.... wanting the W. Losing Strueby that early really put the monkey in the wrench.... I was actually just starting to type out the lines on my BlackBerry when bam.... major penalty. So it became a hodge podge of lines for the Pats.

When the Pats were trailing 3-1 after the second period I honestly would have been content with the loss just because of the teams effort and their never quit. People may say that the Blades laid off.... I honestly don't think they did; they kept on getting quality chances all game (except for the first 6 or 7 minutes of the third). the Pats worked just as hard as the Blades and showed that they can compete. About 4 minutes into the third I was really content with the way the game was going and I would have accepted the loss. I said that to my dad and he said "no, we're going to overtime." And voilà OT. It was probably the most exciting Pats game I've seen in many years.

--------
Damien Ketlo is now becoming a force. He's one fine goalie and will only get better. I still can't believe some of the stops he has been making.

Jason Gardiner had by far his best game as a Pat. It seems with the more ice he gets the better he is and I was impressed by his nose for the net and not being afraid to get involved.

Colten Teubert, Cody Carlson, Brandon Davidson and Matt Delahey appear to be the teams top 4 d-men and the go to guys for the third period.Pym and Borstmayer may have seen a shift or 2 in the third but they were pretty much stapled to the bench. It makes me wonder where Bell fits into the equation when he gets healthy and health scratch Sparrow where does he fit? The teams d is improving.... they are still prone to making the odd mistake but Ketlo is becoming more and more reliable to bail the team out.

Eberle and Weal played a TON and they both were their magic selves. I do wish that both would stop being so fancy and just rip the puck. They both have great shots and both are capable of scoring a lot (in my opinion).

Hutt is finding his stride and continues to get better. He seemed to have some magic with Mitchell and Gardiner in theis game and I wonder if Hunt will keep them as a unit (for at least the first.... or until he starts changing things up).

Hricina looked a bit tentative in this one wearing the full cage after getting ran from behind in the last game. Leffler seemed a bit tired out there but seemed to be in the middle of it most of the game.

I do think if the Pats can keep this up they will be fine.

GO PATS GO!

Some thoughts from the game.....
Damien Ketlo is really making me a believer. I honestly don't recall a goalie making saves of the spectacular sort like he has recently and he made at least 2 or 3 of them in this contest. He's getting better each game.

For all of the Colten Teubert haters out there.... Grow Up! He has been a beast recently and in this game he was a stalwart on D. I've noticed that people near me aren't on him as much.... until he makes what people perceive to be a mistake by him.... in my opinion the errors are becoming few and far between. He's becoming a real leader.

It was nice to see Carlson get his first as a Pat, especially against his former club. He has been a fine addition to the Pats blue line corps. His speed and his puck moving ability have helped the Pats backend a ton.

Strueby scores a couple of his specialty...garbage... goals. At least you know he's going to the net and getting chances. Goals are goals and the more he scores the better it is for the whole team.

A couple of nice snipes by Leffler who seemed like he tried to pick the team up and put them on his back for periods of time. It was like he was trying to will the team to win.

Jordan Weal was truly amazing this game... he was all over the ice and all over the score sheet picking up 4 assists. His effort and his creativity cause the opposition to pay that much more attention to him freeing up his linemates for scoring chances. Could have easily been the first star.

Jordan Eberle is truly a gift for us fans to watch. I know he gets a ton of press and attention but this kid is special. I hate drawing comparisons to former Pats so I won't. All I know is that in my thirty years of watching Pats hockey he is one of the best.

I wish I would have taken a pen to scribble notes down but I didn't and I was going by memory and mentioned the players that really stood out. Gardiner had a good game (getting some ice time now), Hutt is getting his stride, Davidson was again solid, Mitchell finally got his first of the year and is looking more and more like he's going to take the next step, Gustafsson seems to be getting it now and soon he will break out. I have nothing bad to say about this one so I won't try to drum up anything.

I will post my Pats/Blades thoughts tomorrow.

Brayden Metz re-assigned to Melville (SJHL)

As per his request.

The Media Release from Regina Pats dot com

Metz to Junior-A
2009-11-02

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats wish to announce that forward Brayden Metz has requested to be re-assigned to the Melville Millionaires of the SJHL.

With the Pats this season, Metz has played in 15 games this season with a goal and 5 assists while picking up 9 minutes in penalties. He played 18 games with the Millionaires last season accumulating 15 points.

Regina Pats General Manager, Brent Parker, “Brayden’s decision to return to Jr A is disappointing to us but he just felt that his heart was not in it anymore to try to play at the highest level. The sacrifice and commitment to play in the WHL is far greater than at the Jr. A Level and sometimes kids just are not willing to do what is needed. Brayden is a good kid and we wish him all the best.”

This now leaves the Pats with 23 players on the roster: 13 forwards, 8 defencemen and 2 goaltenders.

Next Pats action is this Wednesday night as Canadian National Junior team Head Coach; Willie Desjardins brings his Medicine Hat Tigers to town. It’s a 7pm puck drop at the Brandt Centre, for tickets, head to www.reginapats.com or call the Ticketmaster box office at 543-7800.
