Game Story

From ReginaPats.com

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – Who would have though one player would make this much of a difference, but when your name is Jordan Eberle, it makes all the difference in the world for the Regina Pats as they were in Prince Albert tonight to face the Raiders.
Pats open the scoring in the first Jordan Weal streaked down the left side and chipped it out front and it went off of a defenceman, and after a quick review, it was a 1-0 Pats lead.
They made it 2-0 on the power play as Jordan Eberle took advantage of a poor clearing attempt from Raider goaltender Steven Stanford
The second started much the same as the first with the line of Eberle, Weal and Leffler connecting with Eberle went cross ice to Jordan Weal and he went shelf to make it 3-0
The blue and white went on the power play again...this time Brayden Metz tipped a Tomas Hricina shot for his first goal making it 4-0. That goal chased off Raider goaltender Steven Stanford and Jacob Edwards came in.
He didn’t fare any better when the Pats took a 5 goal lead just over a minute later, as Brett Leffler stepped over the blue line and wired one that was stopped, but Jordan Eberle was there for the rebound.
The Raiders did get on the scoreboard on a goalmouth scramble that was buried by Jordan Hickmott to cut the Pats lead to 5-1.
The offensive flurry continue, with Eberle making an unbelievable stick handling move at the blue line and then fed Matt Strueby for a breakaway that he went backhand and then forehand to beat Edwards. The goal was Strueby’s 4th of the season.
The five goal second period explosion finished with Jordan Weal picking up the hat trick off a Kyle Mulder rebound and that made it a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes.
The Pats found themselves in some tremendous penalty trouble with 3 consecutive 5-on-3’s and the Raiders Dustin Cameron scored on the third 2-man advantage.
The Raiders scored their second straight power play goal 36 seconds later as Jordan Hickmott scored his fourth of the season to cut it to 7-3.
On another Raider power play, the Pats cashed in with their second shorthanded goal as Brett Leffler went in on a breakaway for his first goal of the night.
The scoring was rounded out on a Pats power play when the newly acquired Killian Hutt scored his first goal in his first game as a Pat.
Pats Head Coach, Curtis Hunt was booted out of the game at the 12:54 mark of the game after Tomas Hricina was run from behind by Harrison Ruopp, the was no penalty called, so Hircina took things into his own hands. Hunt threw a water bottle at the official after missing the latent hit from behind.
Molson Cup 3 Starts:
3 – Brett Leffler
2 – Jordan Weal
1 – Jordan Eberle

More goals are required

"I think we've done a lot of real good things over the first five games,'' Pats general manager Brent Parker said. "Our defence has been playing pretty good. Our goaltending has been pretty good. We've blocked more shots in our first five games than we did all of last year.''

Rob Vanstone has the full story at LeaderPost.com.

Hunt won't forget time as a Raider

"When we make the turn on to 6th Avenue towards the rink, I always think of 'Friday night at the 'Plex' or 'Wednesday night at the 'Plex,' '' Hunt said on Tuesday. "That's what we used to say as players.''

Bad news for Garrett Mitchell

Out 4 to 6 weeks with a broken thumb (was kinda expected). Bad news for the Pats.

Greg Harder has the story on his Slap Shots.

---------
"It sucks, but there's nothing much you can do,'' the Regina-born Mitchell said. "You've just got to battle through it. I can't change anything now.

"It's better to take things a little slower and get it looked after right away than to rush back and hurt it again. It's still early in the season. I just want to get back playing as soon as I can.''

Pats transactions (aside from the Hutt deal)

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots....

NOTE
: To make room for Eberle and Hutt, the Pats are shipping D Dominic Perrault (North Battleford, SJHL) and C Lucas Froese (Winnipeg Saints, MJHL) to the junior A ranks. Perrault, 18, didn’t fit into the plans on defence. He was a healthy scratch for the first three games of the season before seeing some action as a forward on Sunday night with the team short-handed up front. Froese, 17, dressed for two games, but has arguably shown more upside — and certainly more skating ability — than a handful of players who’ve seen regular action so far. The smart money says we haven’t seen the last of Froese, who has potential as a checking/energy player . . . The Pats' roster in now set (barring more injuries or trades) with 24 players: 14 forwards, eight defencemen and two goalies.

Jordan Eberle reassigned to the Pats

Official as per Rod's blog.

---------------
This will be a HUGE boost to the Pats. I can't wait to see him back in a Pats uniform.

Some thoughts

I've been too lazy to post my thoughts until now.... here are some thoughts from the last few games mish-mashed together.

From Sunday's game....
All I have to say is that I'm disappointed and I'm not 100% sure why. Sure they lost but that isn't it. I can't pinpoint it. Maybe it's the fact that the Pats dressed 9 defencemen! NINE! Count 'em NINE. I really can't ever recall seeing that anywhere. The Pats are lacking a true PP quarterback.... wait a minute we have one that is 16 and needs to get in there and learn..... Oh ya he was dressed as a winger and played on the top line and did a good job. but he's a DEFENCEMAN! I just don't get it.

Okay now I can understand the Pats wanting/needing some speed, but why dress 9 defencemen? If the forwards aren't going to cut it (due to speed or whatever), why are they still here? I want to answer but it is a bit early to really say anything.

----------------
Anyways I have a few thoughts about a bunch of players and I will go through them now....

Dawson Guhle.... I really don't have a good read on this kid yet. He has been stellar for much of his time but has a penchant for giving up a weak goal here or there (and everywhere. He will be a complete star in the net but then let in the weakest of goals (at least 1 or 2 per game so far). I'm sorry but I really hope Ketlo comes back soon.

Brandon Davidson.... is going to be a top defenceman for the Pats for the next couple of years. He's been really impressive and has been getting better each game.

Alex Pym.... has improved immensely this year. Lots of ice time and has finally reached into the top 4 on the depth chart.

Myles Bell.... Darn good 16 year old that is lost.... and it isn't his fault. He's a defenceman but playing wing. Put him back at the point.

Kyle Mulder..... finally got to play and has fit right in on the checking line. Probably has more ice time this year than all of last season.

Jordan Weal.... Has been great. Just needs to get some help in the offensive zone.... He's going to put up some great numbers.

Colten Teubert.... Has been fine. I honestly can't believe some people.... the play has nothing to do with him (just happens to be on the ice) and they scream and holler at him. I think with him on the ice the rest of the players play like they are 6 inches taller than they are.

Dominick Favreau.... For a first round pick he just hasn't panned out the way most people had predicted. I don't know if/when he will be a scorer. As a checker he's doing good.

Tomas Hricina.... I expected more from him..... maybe my expectations were too high. He's had some numbers so far.... but has looked lost at times.

Travis Sparrow.... I'm not really sure what the team sees in him but I'm sorry I just don't think he's that good. Maybe as a 7th d-man but not as a top 6'er.

Graham Hood..... Hasn't improved much from last year. Big and really slow (skating just doesn't seem there). With the amount of speed in the league he just can't keep up.

Michal Poletin..... Has good size and decent speed for a guy of his size but doesn't seem to fit into Hunt's style. I don't know if he ever will. Will see.

That's all for tonight.

Strueby the third 20-year-old

Greg Harder's LeaderPost article can be found here.

Plus they also have the SCOUTING REPORT at the end of the article which I am going to post here:

SCOUTING REPORT

MOOSE JAW (1-1-0-0) at REGINA (1-2-0-0)

Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre

Radio: 620 CKRM

Key injuries: REGINA -- G Damien Ketlo (groin, day-to-day); RW Garrett Mitchell (thumb, indefinite); MOOSE JAW -- D Ryan Stanton (groin, day-to-day).

Overview: It's the first of eight meetings between these East Division rivals. Both are looking to bounce back from disappointing seasons. Regina missed the playoffs with a 27-39-1-5 record while Moose Jaw finished with the worst record in the league (19-50-1-2) . . . The Warriors fired GM Chad Lang in the off-season and replaced him with director of hockey operations Jeff Truitt, a former head coach of the WHL's Kelowna Rockets . . . Moose Jaw's roster is largely intact from last season, led by Regina product Jason Bast (3-1--4). Quinton Howden (2-3--5) is also off to a quick start, as is D Travis Hamonic (1-4--5) . . . The Warriors have scored a league-best 12 goals in their first two games. Regina has just five in three games. Three of those goals came from Matt Strueby . . . Ex-Pats G Jeff Bosch has started both games for Moose Jaw so far (4.20 GAA, .852 SP) . . . Pats rookie Dawson Guhle could get his second straight start in place of the injured Ketlo. Guhle picked up the win in his first WHL start on Wednesday, stopping 29 of 32 shots -- plus two of two in the shootout -- in a 4-3 win over Saskatoon. Derek Tendler has been called up from the SJHL's Estevan Bruins to serve as an emergency backup.

Pats Captain situation

Rod Pedersen has a blurb on his Friday Rodservations regarding the Pats Captaincy. I asked Rod who the Pats Captain was going to be and I wound up winning a prize in the Ask The Broadcaster segment on Sept. 18's game in Saskatoon. I am going to pick that up today. Anyways to save you from scrolling and missing the part on Rod's blog I will post it here.

Now to the hockey...

Everybody wants to know what the Regina Pats are going to do with their captaincy. The "C" became available last spring with the graduation of Victor Bartley (love this photo). Edit: Check out Rod's blog to see the picture.

Coach Curtis Hunt said the other night he's going to hold off on the decision for at least a month. Right now there are four guys he considers to be in the running for the job but everyone's on their best behaviour and tripping all over themselves doing their best to lead the team. Why would he want to end that anytime soon?

When the time is right, the matter will be put to a dressing room vote. Curtis has never done this in the past, but feels now's the time to do it.

I agree it's the best way. It's democratic, and no one can argue with the results. Unless you're in Florida.

Time running out for Eberle

.... in Edmonton. Check out Greg Harder's Slap Shots.

The Edmonton Journal article that Greg mentions is found here.

I've decided to change up my blog....

I was inspired by the new look Pats' jerseys and decided to switch up the plain looking The Blueliner to give it some colour and I hope people like it. I don't think I'm done and I will be tinkering with it over the next few days (weeks). I'll see how it works out.... I can always change it back.

Pats decide on their 20's

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots.

Here's the press release from Greg's blog...

Pats settle on 20s
By Greg Harder Thu, Sep 24 2009

Media release:

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats have put an end to their 20 year old puzzle by today putting forward Mitch Czibere on waivers for purpose of re-assignment to Junior-A.
Czibere, along with a 2009 4th round bantam pick, came to the Pats early in the 2008-09 campaign from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for defencemen Curtis Kulchar and Todd Kennedy. In 53 games last season, Czibere set career highs in goals (11), assists (18) and points (29).
This leaves the Pats with three 20 year olds: Brett Leffler, Matt Delahey and Matt Strueby.
18 year old forward Garrett Mitchell suffered an injured thumb in last night’s 4-3 shootout win over the Saskatoon Blades. He will be heading for more x-rays early next week and is out indefinitely.
The Pats will be back on the ice Friday night for the first match-up of the season with the Moose Jaw Warriors. The two annually battle for the Mayor’s Cup Championship, which the Pats took last season 5 games to 1.
Tickets are available for the highway one battle right now at the Ticketmaster box office, call 543-7800 for details. You can also get your tickets at any Canada Safeway store in Regina for just $10, GST included. This will get you a seat in the Safeway “Family Fun Zone”, which is located in the newly finished upper deck in the East end of the Brandt Centre.

Pats have log-jam for overage positions

Greg Harder has the story at LeaderPost.com. He also has the Scouting Report which follows:

SCOUTING REPORT

SASKATOON (1-0-0-0) at REGINA (0-2-0-0)

Today, 7 p.m., Brandt Centre

Radio: 620 CKRM

Key injuries: REGINA -- None to report; SASKATOON -- None to report.

Overview: The Blades are back at full strength after the return of their last two NHL campers: F Milan Kytnar (Edmonton) and D Jyri Niemi (New York Islanders) . . . Regina is also welcoming back two key veterans: D Colten Teubert (L.A.) and Matt Delahey (New Jersey). RW Jordan Eberle remains with the Oilers . . . By trading F Chris Langkow to the Everett Silvertips on Tuesday, the Blades have settled on Kytnar, Derek Hulak and Walker Wintoneak (all forwards) as their three 20-year-olds . . . Kytnar's unexpected return (he's under contract to Edmonton) means the team is shopping rookie Swedish forward Hampus Gustafsson. The Blades will run with Kytnar and Niemi as their two imports . . . Saskatoon has played just one regular-season game to date -- a 5-1 win over Regina on Friday. The teams were involved in a third-period line brawl but weren't disciplined by the league . . . LW Matt Strueby has scored the Pats' lone goal over two games. He's also the only member of the team to record a point . . . G Damien Ketlo has stopped 65 of 72 shots in his first two games as the Pats' starter for a .903 save percentage.

Edit: The log-jam sure lasted a long time haha. I'm glad it's been dealt with. Now Parker can get on to dealing Rowat.... Hopefully they can get something for him.

Leffler wants to be a leader

Check out Greg Harder's Slap Shots for the article.

-----------
Looking at my poll that I put up a while ago people seem to think the same thing 16 of 30 picked Leffler to wear the "C".

Final Poll stats:
Jordan Eberle 5 (16%)
Colten Teubert 1 (3%)
Brett Leffler 16 (53%)
Matt Delahey 4 (13%)
Garrett Mitchell 3 (10%)
Other 1 (3%)
------------
I think that Leffler has been groomed to be the "C" since the beginning of his career.... but is he worthy of it I dunno. I don't think that I will be too disappointed whatever way they go with the "C". I just find it weird that is taking a long time to make up their minds. I'm starting to think that if/when Jordan comes back he will be the "C" almost by default.

Rod Pedersen has the story on his blog: here.

Edit: Here is the story from the Leader-Post here, also by Greg Harder.

I don't have much to say right at the moment as I am a little disappointed with tonight's game. Some players looked good.... others looked bad.... I will have a few more thoughts tomorrow. I just need to digest this one a bit.

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots.

Here's an updated version of the team preview that appeared in our Pats supplement (a special pull-out section in Thursday's Leader-Post). There's nothing really new here but it does provide a basic overview.

REGINA PATS

Last season: 27-39-1-5, 10th in Eastern Conference; missed playoffs.
General manager: Brent Parker (15th season).
Head coach: Curtis Hunt (fifth).
Assistants: Shaun Sutter (first), Todd Strueby (fourth), Ryan Cyr (goalie coach, third).
Key losses: D Victor Bartley, LW Matt Robertson (both graduated).
The 20-year-olds: C Mitch Czibere, D Matt Delahey, RW Brett Leffler and LW Matt Strueby (one must go).
The imports: Veteran Slovak LW Tomas Hricina and rookie Czech LW Michal Poletin.
Key returnees: Regina’s fate hinges on the return of RW Jordan Eberle, D Colten Teubert and D Matt Delahey from NHL camps . . . RW Brett Leffler (33 goals) and LW Matt Strueby (25) need to build upon their breakout seasons, providing offensive support for Eberle and C Jordan Weal, last year’s top rookie in the Eastern Conference . . . Hricina has the physical tools for a breakout sophomore year . . . Hard-working RW Garrett Mitchell is ready to become a team leader . . . Alex Pym could be the key to the defence if he responds to a top-four role.
New faces: LW Jason Gardiner, 18 (trade from Tri-City) and C Brayden Metz, 19 (waiver claim from Moose Jaw) . . . Seven rookies — G Dawson Guhle, D Myles Bell, D Tyler Borstmayer, D Brandon Davidson, LW Lucas Froese, Poletin and C Andrew Rieder.
Watch for: Damien Ketlo to be under the microscope as Regina’s new starter after Linden Rowat was sent home to await a trade . . . Bell to be a fixture on the blueline at age 16.
Just notes: Hunt is back for his second stint with Regina after a year in the Ottawa Senators’ organization. He replaces Pats legend Dale Derkatch, who was fired after one season.
Did you know: Eberle and Teubert are expected to reprise their roles with Canada at the world juniors in Saskatoon and Regina.
The prognosis: Expectations are low for a lineup that’s eerily similar to last season’s underachieving group. However, the stabilizing influence of Hunt, combined with the presence of elite talent like Eberle, Teubert and Weal, should allow Regina to get back into the playoffs, perhaps even surprise some people.

Last year's nightmare may not be over yet for the Regina Pats

A very interesting read brought to us by Greg Harder. It's about time someone said it like it may just be. The Pats have a lot to prove this year..... especially after the debacle of 2008-09.

Eberle rumour from Rod's blog

Link

Regina Pats star Jordan Eberle did NOT suit up for the Edmonton Oilers in their 4-1 preseason victory at Calgary last night.

I got a tip yesterday from someone I consider to be a pretty good source that the Oilers will return Eberle to the Pats as early as some time this weekend.

Now, that would surprise me given the fact he's a signed, first round draft pick and you'd expect him to stay with the big club throughout most of the NHL exhibition season but hey, this is just what I've been told.

Obviously, we're watching it very closely.

Parker speaks on Rowat - goalie situation

Greg Harder has the info you want here.

WHL playing experience

I was doing some calculations (see last 2 posts) and decided to go and look at the playing experience and came up with some numbers....

Total goalie gp: 20
Total defencemen gp: 580
Total forwards gp: 1388
Total whl experience: 1988

Average goalie gp: 10.00
Average defencemen gp: 64.44
Average forwards gp: 92.53
Average whl experience: 76.46

NOW.... with the Pats 4 campers the numbers change completely, especially on d.

Total goalie gp: 20
Total defencemen gp: 188
Total forwards gp: 1056
Total whl experience: 1264

Average goalie gp: 10.00
Average defencemen gp: 26.86
Average forwards gp: 81.23
Average whl experience: 48.62

With Teubert and Delahey gone to camp.... that's 392 games right there..... leaving 188 TOTAL games on defence. Alex Pym has 103 of them..... leaving 85 or 14.17 games of experience per player. Methinks the Pats may just need a hand with a vet on d.

And also if you look at the goaltending situation Ketlo and Guhle have a combined 20 games (all 20 by Ketlo).... am I concerned about lack of experience? Not yet, but itshould make for an interesting start to the season.

Curtis Hunt quotes as he's preparing for 09-10

From Rod's blog. Hopefully he doesn't mind that I am posting the comments (saves people from having to scroll and search out the comments.

Pats coach Curtis Hunt was on Sportsline last night as well. The team dropped goalies Linden Rowat and Derek Tendler on Monday and has elected to go with Damien Ketlo and Dawson Guhle for the 2009-2010 season. Here are some comments from Curtis from the show:

ON WHERE THEY STAND AFTER THE PRESEASON:

HUNT: I look at us today and we're a better group and a better team. We're a lot more committed unit and have a greater understanding of what we need to be than when we first got together for camp a month ago.

ON MISSING FOUR NHL DRAFTED PLAYERS RIGHT NOW:

HUNT: Obviously you're taking out four go-to players (Jordan Eberle, Colten Teubert, Matt Delahey and Garrett Mitchell) with great experience in the league. That's a big void in terms of leadership as well as the abilities they bring to the game. Having said that it's allowed us a look into the window of the future because a lot of young players had to step up and fill some valuable ice time.

ON THE TRADEMARK HE'D LIKE FOR HIS REGINA PATS:

HUNT: Our mandate here is we want to be an aggressive hockey club that plays with great responsiblity. We want to be stingy defensively but we want to provide some offence for our fans. We want to be a team that can win games 2-1, but also a team that can come from behind. Are we there yet? No.

Leffler motivated for final year

Story by Greg Harder and it is here.

-------------
I hope for Leffler and the Pats' sake that he continues to play for the crest on the front of the jersey not the name on the back. I know it's kinda dumb to state that but there have been a few guysd who played out the string trying to get themselves good numbers and don't overly help the team (i.m.o Bartley was one last year). I hope Leffler continues to play hard and with passion. He will get the numbers and help the Pats drive for a playoff spot.

Pats NHL Campers Update

Greg Harder has the lowdown on Slap Shots.

Sept. 13 Pats @ Raiders

I just thought I would check to see if the game was on the radio and I was able to tune into the game on 900 CKBI's Live Stream. Less than 30 seconds left in the first when I tuned in, so I don't know the scratches.

Score is 0-0 after 1 period. Shots 15-11 Raiders. Ketlo vs. Zemlak in the battles between the pipes. Powerplays 0-1 Pats, 0-3 Raiders.

Update(1): Nathan Deck scores on a 5-on-3 to make it 1-0 Raiders about 2 minutes into the 2nd.
Update(2):Tyler Borstmayer scores 4 on 4 (at 16:54) to make it 1-1 with about 3 minutes left in the 2nd. Myles Bell and Jordan Weal announced as assists. The 2nd period ends 1-1. Shots 13-4 Raiders. Raider 1-3 on the PP and the Pats 0-1.
Update(3): Early in the 3rd.... Brayden Metz scores on the man advantage with the assists to Matt Strueby and Jordan Weal to make it 2-1 Pats. The announcer Drew Wilson keeps on calling Strueby; Todd. The color guy corrected Wilson and they had a good chuckle. Then calls him Todd about 30 seconds later. I really like these announcers.
Update(4): Brandon Herrod connects on the PP assisted by Justin Maylan and Nathan Deck 4:08 into the 3rd. Score is now 2-2.
Update(5): Craig McCallum scores on the PP assisted by Ryan Aasman with about 7 minutes left. 3-2 Raiders.
Update(6): Pats lose 3-2. Powerplays were 3/10 for the Raiders and 1/5 for the Pats. Final shots 41-27 for the Raiders.

Pats 6 Blades 5 (OT)

I will have a quick write-up and the summary in a bit. Leffler scores 4 goals in the win (including the winner).

I will have to call this one a "stripes show" as the referees forever had their arms in the air calling penalties. Montsion and Gagnon kept themselves in the spotlight.... no blame to the oficials as there really wasn't too many "bad" calls but man o man lots of calls they cold have let them play but I think they were getting paid per whistle. Unofficially the powerplay's were 12 (2 goals) for the Blades and 8 (2 goals) for the Pats.

The first period started off waaaay better than the Wednesday night game.... anyway the Blades opened the scoring with a screen shot by Brendon Wall at 3:17 past Pats goalie Derek Tendler who couldn’t have seen it with the bodies in front of the net. The assists go to Tyler Yaworski and Gaelen Patterson. Blades 1-0.

The Pats tied it up just over 3 minute later at the 6:42 mark. From in close Matt Strueby deposited the Pats first goal of the game past Matthew Krahn the assists got to Alex Pym and Jordan Weal. Tie game 1-1.

Brett Leffler scored his first of the game to make the score 2-1 on the powerplay with a wrister past Krahn (who seemed to go down early on most shots tonight). Assists to Matt Strueby and Brayden Metz.

Tomas Hricina made the score 3-1 with a wraparound goal on the powerplay (I could swear someone else potted it but then again I wasn’t paying really close attention tonight). Alex Pym and Mitch Czibere picked up the assists.

Josh Nicholls made the score 3-2 with 1.3 seconds left with a goal from in close in a mad scramble. The ref’s reviewed it (I’m not sure why, it was clearly in..... looked like it might have been directed in with a hand but hard to tell with 5 or 6 guys in front of Tendler).

The second period was opened up with a snap shot by Brett Leffler which beat Krahn clean. Assists to Jordan Weal and Tomas Hricina. Pats were up 4-2.

Blades make it 4-3 with another goal from a mad scramble in front of Tendler. The defence seemed lost on this goal and Tendler had no chance to make the save. The goal went to Walker Wintoneak assisted by Duncan Siemans.

Goalie switch Tendler allows 3 goals on 23 shots and Krahn allows 4 goals on 21 shots. I will comment more on them later. Guhle and Sharkey replace the starters at 11:07 mark of the 2nd period.

Blades tied the game at 4 on a 5 on 3 powerplay goal. Darian Dziurzynski gets the goal and Chris Langkow and Walker Wintoneak got the assists.

Brett Leffler completes the hat trick at the 0:37 second mark shorthanded (3-on-4). Yet another snapshot that beat the Blades goalie top shelf glove side. The goal was unassisted. The officials really screwed something up here. The Pats were down 2 playing three on four when Leffler scored. Montsion calls the Blades Wall for delay of game and lets the other Blade player out of the box so the Blades were still on the powerplay instead of being 3-on-3. I don`t know how else to say it other than I think the ref thought that the Pats were on powerplay. I think it confused everyone except Montsion.

Blades tied the game yet again with a goal from Tyler Matheson assisted by Gaelen Patterson. I didn`t really see how this was scored but the Pats had a slight break down defensively and the Blades capitalized.

Onto overtime.... on a delayed penalty call the Pats d passed the puck around until the extra attacker could make it onto the ice. The extra attacker I believe was Leffler and he ended up with the puck on his tape and he snapped a shot past Sharkey. Brandon Davidson and Tyler Borstmayer with the assists.

Notes:
The Blades goalies were a tad shaky tonight. Krahn didn`t have a good outing. Sharkey was alright at times but seemed to go down way too early.

Sorry Blades fans I really wasn`t watching too many players that closely but I did keep an eye out for a few. Duncan Seimans looks like he will be a good d-man sooner than later. He did get burnt a couple of times but he will learn. Brent Benson was noticeable at times but disappeared for most of the game I don’t know if he was tired but he didn’t look great tonight. I did notice that the Blades hit everything anytime that they could. Once they get their vets back they will be good.

The Pats

The Good: Jordan Weal is crazy good. He is going to light it up. Brett Leffler looks like a man possessed and I hope he is named captain. Myles Bell, Brandon Davidson and Tyler Borstmayer..... I hope all three make the team this year. Matt Strueby.... I don’t have too much bad to say tonight he had a good outing.

The No-So Good: Travis Sparrow just seemed lost out there a couple times tonight and I haven’t been overly impressed with him too much recently. Shamus Graham looked like he didn’t fit into the scheme of things and was out of position quite a bit tonight.

The Indifferent: Jason Gardiner took some unnecessary penalties but made up for it with some nice physicality and good penalty kills. Brayden Metz, Dominick Favreau, Graham Hood, Andrew Rieder and Clarke Breitkreuz never stood out good or bad tonight.

I've added a poll

Hey all,

I noticed that Rod removed his poll as to who should be Pats' captain (I think that Eberle was waaaaay in front).... So I decided to start my own poll just to see where people stand. I will have some thoughts as to whom should be or could be captain in a bit.

Murray faces unique battle

A great article by Scott Cruikshank from today's Leader-Post, it can be found here. Garth is doing his best to make crack the big show roster with the Flames. Good Luck Garth!

Greg Harder has a preview/update on his blog

.... you can find it here.

---------
One tidbit of info that I find interesting regarding the teams' goalie battle is this:

Hunt confirmed that rookies Dawson Guhle and Derek Tendler will share the netminding duties in Saturday’s game. They’re battling for the backup job, with Guhle positioned as the front-runner based on his performance to date. The game could decide who wins that battle and who gets a ticket to junior A.
The Pats aren’t confirming this but you can watch for Damien Ketlo to go the distance on Sunday in Prince Albert as a final tune-up for next Friday’s season-opener in Saskatoon.
As you read here on a previous post, Ketlo will get first dibs on the starter’s job. It’s up to him to take advantage but it sounds like the team is very confident he can do the job.
Linden Rowat, unfortunately, is in limbo while awaiting word on a possible trade. Just to be clear, this situation isn't a reflection on Rowat as a player or a person. It's simply a numbers issue due to too many 20-year-olds and some quality young netminders that the team can't afford to hold back any longer. As a result, the only way Rowat would end up staying in Regina is if there’s an injury or some sort of major meltdown by his successor.

Kovacs inducted into Regina Sports Hall of Fame

Tim Switzer of the Leader-Post wrote the article and it can be found here.

A great quote from the article by Kovacs:
"The Pup Line is turned into the Old Dog Line now," Kovacs said laughing. "I love being back here in Regina. It's a city of 200,000 people, but people never forget who you are. Any athlete who plays any sport and gives their heart to it, people don't forget who they are. I can walk downtown when I'm working (as a constable with the Regina Police Service) and people will say, 'You're Frank Kovacs from the Pup Line.' I'll remember them too. It goes both ways. They don't forget you; you don't forget them."

----------
I remember the Pup Line and they were fun to watch mature over the years with the Pats. In all honesty I have the Pup Line poster hanging up in my basement. It brings back memories. Congratulations Frank!

Bell plays beyond his young age

Story by Greg Harder, you can find it here.

Interesting quote from Brent Parker in comparing Bell to Barret Jackman:
"He really is a kid that wants to win and has that look; you can see it in his eyes," noted the veteran GM. "He probably has better offensive abilities than Barret had. I think Barret was a little better defensively at this age but there are a lot of comparisons in terms of the mental part of it and the physical component too."

----------
I have thought about who to best compare Bell to and Jackman really didn't come into my mind (although thinking about it they are similar). My instant comparison to him ability-wise would be Logan Pyett. Both are offensive minded, both can skat and both can shoot. I really like what Bell brings to the table.

Pats talking trades

Greg Harder is reporting that the Pats may have multiple deals in the works. Mitch Czibere and Linden Rowat are the names being mentioned. Read it here.

Pats roster move

Thanks to Greg Harder Joel Harnden was re-assigned to Alberta AAA today.

Check out Slap Shots for more info.
---------
Edit: This move doesn't surprise me one bit. On Wednesday Joel played the first period and some of the second and I don't think he saw the ice in the 3rd period. I think he can be a good hockey player once he gets a bit of seasoning in M-AAA. He has decent speed and just needs to fill out a bit and I think we will have a good player.

KS

Pre-season or not, Pats need a win

Greg Harders Slap Shots has an interesting perspective and can be found here.

Interesting quote from Hunt:
“The thing about winning is you have to earn it,” added Hunt. “We weren’t close to earning that tonight. I think it was there for us. This is a group that we need to have that workman mentality. Until we do that consistently for upwards of 50 to 60 minutes we’ll continue to have this kind of outcome.”

And his story from the Leader-Post can be found here.

An interesting thought from goalie Linden Rowat (who let in the forst 2 shots he faced last night, one wasn't his fault at all but the confidence of the team just went and hid under a rock after the 1st goal):
"We definitely need a win," insisted Pats goalie Linden Rowat. "The regular season starts after our next two games. We want some momentum going into that but for that to happen we need to bear down and work our tails off and figure out what we need to do on the ice. Things aren't clicking for us right now and it all comes down to hard work."

--------
After seeing last nights performance I think that they are a LONG way from really being competetive. I thought after watching the training camp they looked to be looking good but I'm starting to question myself.

Pats unveil RBK Edge jerseys

For pictures check out Rod Pedersen's blog.

For a look at all of the WHL jersey's check out chl.ca.

Edit: I don't know how closely anyone has looked at the jerseys.... But if you notice the shoulder patches (you can kind of make them out on the pictures that Rod posted) each jersey has different patches. The "home" blue jersey appears to have the P.P.C.L.I patches on both shoulders and the "away" white jersey has the bulldog head patch that has been around for a few seasons.

Now I'm curious about the socks (hopefully normal type striping) and the jersey fonts (I'm hoping they drop the italic style numbers for the old-school block jersey numbers that a lot of teams have). Edit (2): The Pats have pictures up and it looks like the jersey numbers will indeed be the block style red with white trim on the blue uniform and blue with red trim on the white uniform. And the socks look "normal" with no crazy patterns or anything crazy on them.

Pats vs. Wheats pre-season preview

Game notes from various blogs:

Greg Harder's Slap Shots.

Rod Pedersen's blog.

New RBK Edge jersey's coming soon.....

It looks as though the Pats (and the rest of the CHL) will be following suit with the NHL and bringing in the new Edge jersey's. I look forward to seeing them. Although I hope they don't mess up the current design.... change might be a good thing. I did like the 3rd red jersey design from last year (much like the 2008-09 Rochester Americans design) but I don't think that red will be a main colour in the big scheme of things. Stay tuned.

You can see the Pats red 3rd sweater from last season here as they were going to "Soldier On"

I found this article to be interesting...

Pats' Eberle ready for Oilers rookie camp
The story is by Joanne Ireland (CanWest News Service)

Here's an interesting quote from Mr. Eberle:
Because he is just 19, the Regina Pats product will return to the Western Hockey League if he doesn't advance to the Oilers' 23-man roster.

"It's a win-win situation," Eberle continued. "I'd like to be playing here, to make that step, but if I go back to the WHL, it's not such a bad scenario either. We'd be trying to win a Memorial Cup and the (2010) world juniors are in Saskatoon."

---------
I really hope that what he says is true. I would hope that he would play his best and dominate the WHL. I've seen players come back from NHL (the ones with HUGE expectations) and stink the place out. For the Pats sake I hope he is back and I really (being honest here) hope he is back.... 19 is just too young. But that's another story for another day.

09-10 Goalie thoughts.....

My take on the 09-10 goaltending comes down to who is the best of the bunch and who gives the Pats the best shot to win. In my opinion there are 3 trains of thought.... 1. try to make the best with what we have (Rowat starts); 2. go young-ish (Ketlo starts); and 3. rebuild from the net out (have growing pains and go with Guhle/Tendler).

Some of the things I am about to write might somewhat contradict what I have written earlier but I think my opinions are somewhat swaying. If I could dream up a perfect scenario I would but in reality there isn't one. The Pats have 4 goalies and only need 2. In other words they need to find homes for 2 of them.

I think Linden Rowat gives the Pats the best chance to win games. He has been fairly and unfairly criticized for his play between the pipes for the Pats. If he wasn’t an overage he would easily be the starter (in my opinion). I don’t think it would be good for him to come back to start for the club as fans would quickly become antsy and any sign of struggle there would be some sort of backlash. Give the guy a break he has played 183 games with the Pats and is one of the top goalies (statistically speaking) in Pats history.

Damien Ketlo is a good goalie but he scares me when he’s in net. I’m not sure what it is but I’m just not overly confident with him in net.... especially to be starter. I hope he can prove me wrong and take the reins. And with only 20 games in the WHL is he ready for the starters role? I can’t say... but I hope so.

Here’s where things get interesting.... Dawson Guhle and Derek Tendler are here in my opinion battling to be the “next one” for the Pats. I really don’t know what other teams have for goalies (especially young ones battling for jobs) but these 2 are ready to play in the WHL.... I just wonder how many other teams think the same things about their young goalies. Both are 17 and both are assets and I have no idea what kind of return either one would bring.

As I only seen the team play scrimmages and the B & W game I can’t really say as to whom is leading the pack so to speak.

If the Pats try to “contend” I can see them keeping Rowat and having Guhle/Tendler in the wings. But that all depends on the overage situation (still have 5).

By going young-ish and having Ketlo start the Pats could try to land an impact overage forward to the line-up and have Guhle/Tendler back-up.

By going rebuild.... doesn’t necessarily mean giving up. Guhle and Tendler are both decent goalies. Let them share duties until one emerges as the starter.

Those are some of the options that Parker faces in the near future. I just hope that the club gets some real value for the goalie(s) they deal.... no Prokop for Bosch deals (ouch).

I look into my crystal ball and going to make the following predictions:
Rowat gets dealt to a team that is trying to contend but is having issues in net.
Ketlo becomes Pats starter and does a decent job.
Guhle wins the back-up battle (barely over Tendler).
Tendler gets re-assigned to the SJHL (although I’m sure the Pat C’s would die to have him back..... sorry Derek)

But then again.... I’m just a fan and I just hope it doesn’t take months to get it done.

OILERS APPOINT SILLINGER DIRECTOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
THE CANADIAN PRESS
9/3/2009 6:19:45 PM

EDMONTON - The Edmonton Oilers have appointed Mike Sillinger their new director of player development.

The 38-year-old native of Regina moves into the position after a 17-year playing career.

"We are very excited to have Mike fill such an important role with us," said Oilers GM Steve Tambellini. "We know his experience of 1,000-plus NHL games will benefit our younger players and the development of their careers."

Sillinger has played for 12 NHL teams, most recently suiting up for the New York Islanders last season.

From Greg Harder's Slap Shots

The Great Goalie Debate Part II (plus some Sillinger news)

Another year, another goalie dilemma for the Regina Pats.
Last season, it was a choice between Linden Rowat and Jeff Bosch for the starter’s position while Damien Ketlo and Derek Tendler battled for the backup job. Tendler outplayed Ketlo in camp, but age worked against the youngster, who was sent back to midget. Meanwhile, Bosch didn’t play well enough to unseat Rowat, who retained his starter’s job because he proved to be the most reliable option.
Will history repeat itself? Perhaps, but the landscape has changed. As previously stated, the Pats may not be deep enough as a team this season to use one of their 20-year-old spots on a goaltender. Ideally, Regina would be better served giving that spot to an impact skater (Matt Strueby and Mitch Czibere are the current in-house options but a trade isn’t out of the question, either). The key to the equation is whether one of the younger goalies (Ketlo, Tendler or Dawson Guhle) can jump up and grab the starter’s job. So far, that hasn’t happened, but the pre-season is young. In a perfect world, the situation will sort itself out over the next four exhibition games.
Regardless, the Pats don’t want a repeat of last year when the situation lingered into November, at which point the team was backed into a corner and ended up making a bad trade (Bosch for Neal Prokop). Having depth at the game’s most crucial position is indeed a nice problem to have, but it’s not always an easy one to solve. All four netminders are of WHL calibre. At least one, if not more, might turn out to be a stud. It’s up to the Pats to identify the best one-two combination under the circumstances and turn the leftovers into assets. No easy task, but it’s likely the most important decision facing the brass at this juncture.
“We want to try to do something sooner than later,” GM Brent Parker said recently. “We’ve had some talks with some teams. We’d like to get it resolved. We’ll make a determination after watching some teams about what’s going to be best for all the parties involved. Getting what’s best for all the parties involved to line up is what’s going to be the difficult part. Everyone is going to have a little bit of a different agenda. All those kids wanna play and they wanna play a lot and give their best. It’s going to be difficult to find a way to do that for all of them.”
Asked if the goalie market will be as challenging as it was last season, Parker said: “There’s always teams looking for quality goaltenders. Prince George did something with their situation recently (getting James Priestner from Brandon). I don’t have any doubt that if we decide to move any of those guys that we’ll be able to get a real good draft pick or possibly a player.”
Stay tuned.

— — —

Jordan Eberle is in good hands with the hiring of Mike Sillinger as the director of hockey development with the Edmonton Oilers. Sillinger has also made it known to the Pats that he's willing to lend a hand now that he's a full-time Regina resident.

Here's the media release from the Oilers:

Edmonton Oilers General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the appointment of Mike Sillinger to the position of Director of Player Development.
The 38-year-old native of Regina, Saskatchewan, moves into the position after playing 17 seasons in the National Hockey League.
“We are very excited to have Mike fill such an important role with us,” said Tambellini. “We know his experience of 1,000-plus NHL games will benefit our younger players and the development of their careers.”
As a member of the Oilers Hockey Management Team, Sillinger will work closely with all Oiler draft picks in the junior, college and European ranks. He will also be working with Edmonton’s prospects in the AHL and ECHL.
Sillinger has seen action with 12 NHL clubs, most recently suiting up for the New York Islanders last year. Originally drafted 11th overall in 1990 by the Detroit Red Wings, Sillinger began his NHL career in Detroit before continuing on to play for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Vancouver Canucks, Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning, Florida Panthers, Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators and New York Islanders.
Internationally Sillinger represented Team Canada on two occasions, winning a gold medal at the 1991 World Junior Championship and leading his country as their captain at the 2000 World Championship.

Pats vets Leffler and Rowat focused on junior

By Greg Harder, The Leader-Post September 2, 2009

Hindsight being 20/20, Brett Leffler and Linden Rowat admit there might have been a time when they were guilty of looking at the future through rose-coloured glasses.

Now the view has changed.

While four other drafted members of the Regina Pats get ready to depart for NHL training camps on the weekend, Leffler and Rowat are gaining a new perspective on the business side of hockey as they prepare to stay behind for the first time in three years.

Unable to secure tryout invitations, the 20-year-old veterans -- like a lot of fellow overage players in the WHL -- are now focused on playing out their final season of junior eligibility in hopes of proving to the NHL watchdogs that they deserve another look.

"When you're drafted and stuff, most guys think they're on top of the world," Leffler said prior to Tuesday's practice at the Brandt Centre. "Sometimes you take things for granted. My goal is to have a good year and go out with a bang. I look back four years ago as a 16-year-old, I never thought it was going to go by this fast. I really can't take anything for granted this year. It's your last year to prove yourself. I'm really excited to get going."

Rowat concurred, noting that his eyes have been opened as well.

"You definitely see the business side of it," said the veteran netminder. "I definitely appreciate things a lot more. This is my fifth year in the league and it has flown by. I can't believe this is my last year of eligibility. The next step is pro so for that to happen I have to have a good year. I don't want to take anything for granted. I'm going to work as hard as I did when I was 16, proving myself. It all banks on this year. If I play hard and do my best, hopefully I'll get a shot from a couple different teams if they're willing to look at me."

Leffler and Rowat had everything in front of them after being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL entry draft -- by the Washington Capitals and L.A. Kings, respectively. However, those clubs decided not to sign them early this summer, forcing both players to go back into the pool for the 2009 draft. After being passed over the second time around, making them free agents, Leffler and Rowat were invited to summer development camps (with the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators) in hopes of parlaying the experience into training camp invitations.

It didn't happen, but Leffler isn't dwelling on the past. He and Rowat are now among five players competing for three overage spots on the Pats' roster.

"It went well in Chicago," said the veteran power forward. "It's unfortunate I'm not going back there but that's done with now. I'm not looking back. I'm going to look forward and take the positives out of this year and whatever happens is going to happen. I know what I can do. It's just being consistent all the time, practice and in games. I have to play to my strengths. If I do that, we'll see."

Like Leffler, Rowat had a positive experience at his summer camp in Ottawa and received some strong feedback. However, with some changeover in the Senators' organization and two new goalies signed to minor-league contracts, he had a feeling his opportunity would have to come elsewhere.

"I was hoping to get a tryout somewhere," Rowat added. "I had a good camp in Ottawa but the chips didn't fall my way. I'm a Regina Pat so I'm just gonna work hard, play hard for the boys and help bring them through while we're missing some key guys (due to NHL camps)."
